SURCP is a community based 501(C)(3) collaborative dedicated to social and economic revitalization of the communities located in the South Umpqua river basin geographical area. Our mission is to develop a local workforce, business opportunities and family wage jobs in cooperation with Tribal governments,Federal and State agencies. SURCP facilitates collaborative aquatic and terrestrial based restoration and community based projects with Federal agencies, regional stakeholders and community members on public and private lands. We are recognized as one of 24 Oregon collaboratives focused on resolving the complex social and ecological challenges facing rural southern Oregon counties located in and around Federally managed forest lands. We also facilitate citizen science based projects that promote community health, education and job opportunities with a nexus associated with restoration ecology.

Mission

SURCP is a community based 501(C)(3) collaborative dedicated to social and economic revitalization of the communities located in the South Umpqua river basin geographical area. Our mission is to develop a local workforce, business opportunities and family wage jobs in cooperation with Tribal governments,Federal and State agencies. SURCP facilitates collaborative aquatic and terrestrial based restoration and community based projects with Federal agencies, regional stakeholders and community members on public and private lands. We are recognized as one of 24 Oregon collaboratives focused on resolving the complex social and ecological challenges facing rural southern Oregon counties located in and around Federally managed forest lands. We also facilitate citizen science based projects that promote community health, education and job opportunities with a nexus associated with restoration ecology.

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Phase 2 Tiller Watershed Restoration Project Phase 2. A multi-year project including projects in the upper South Umpqua River watershed and its tributaries. This is a collaboration between US Forest Service, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, South Umpqua Rural Community Partnership, and possibly others as time goes on. This year the focus was restoring habitat with instream work, replacing culverts, decommissioning and rehabilitating roads near sensitive habitat, and restoring wetlands critical to aquatic wildlife. This is the first part of phase 2, and will continue well into 2024. Some completed work has been paid but we did not receive repayment until early 2023. Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board, Highland ditch project, This project is to partner with landowners to remove a defunct irrigation ditch which diverted water from Cow Creek, a tributary of the South Umpqua River.Thee diversion dam was allowing salmon to enter and end up being killed. This is a several year project to form an irrigation district for the landowners, replace the ditch with pipe and pumps, screens to keep fish out State of the multi million dollar project which will involve other state agencies as time goes on..Beaver Conference, a biannual event to educate the public about the need to preserve and restore beaver habitat in our salmon bearing streams. Private parties and members f many agencies give presentations over a three day period. Umpqua Chub Partnership. A multi-year project with the US Forest Service to study the population and distribution of the Umpqua Chub through the use of Forest Service hired Summer Interns to do the instream studies. Now in it's second year, the project has inventoried many miles of the river system to find and record the remaining populations and to gather information needed to develop an Umpqua Chub conservation strategy. Service expenses were reimbursed via the grant at beginning of 2023 as well as some lat year submissions were not reimbursed until early 2024. Shadow Pond Project, A project in cooperation with US Forest Service and Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife using local labor and machinery contractors to drain and restore a large beaver pond and surrounding wetlands to it's original state.Mostly completed in 2023 with some work remaining to be done in 2024. A tributary improvement project designed to improve habitat and passage for Anadromous salmon by instream improvement work and culvert removal and road decommissioning. $52,259.
