“Downtown Associated Youth Services (DAYS), a program of the Edwin and Dorothy Baker Foundation, is committed to improving the quality of life for children and their families. DAYS has been a mainstay in the Long Beach community for over 44 years. Created to provide extracurricular educational opportunities for underserved children and youth in Long Beach, DAYS has gone through an immense expansion since its early days of a simple summer day camp. Over the years, DAYS has increasingly served more low-income, disadvantaged youth and has developed new programming to address emerging community needs. Since its inception in 1970, Downtown Associated Youth Services (DAYS) six-week free Summer Day Camp has served thousands of young people, ages 7-17, offering them educational enrichment in a fun, safe and supportive environment. Summer 2014 brought over 175 campers to the program with an additional 25 high school students participating in our youth leadership program. Although DAYS is present in the community year round now, Summer Day Camp continues to be its flagship program. Year after year, we have a core group of attendees that return, essentially growing up within this camp community. It is during this time were we learned more about the struggles of the children, their families and the community in which they live. Through these conversations we are able to learn where areas of support are needed. Reaching out to our community partners we are able to secure resources to ensure that the needs of the children are being met. This past summer to address some of the issues and challenges facing our youth we once again reached out to our partners and together with the Long Beach Womens Shelter and The Center we were able to create a relevant presentation to address some of the campers concerns, focusing on teen dating violence and bullying. We have successfully transitioned our campers to youth volunteers with many of them returning and becoming paid staff. They are now young adults leading by example, directly inspiring and improving the opportunities for their younger brothers and sisters as well as fellow campers. DAYS provides transportation and partners with a variety of local agencies to offer field trips and learning experiences for 200 children each year. Another significant program is Leaders Long Beach (LLB), established by former 2012 summer day camp participants, who had a desire to give back to their community, promote DAYS, and encourage their peers to volunteer. These committed youth have chosen to be part of the solution, not the problem, to mitigate the challenges faced by youth and families in the inner city. During the school year, LLB continues to meet weekly, participating in workshops that include but are not limited to, active listening, assertive communication, identifying and recognizing their values and strengths, assertive communication, identifying and recognizing their values and strengths, building healthy relationships, developing time management skills, advocacy training, and creating the modules for summer camp. Our trained LLB youth served as summer camp staff. Recently LLB worked with DAYS staff to pilot an innovative curriculum for Summer Camp participants. Targeting elementary and middle school aged children; LLB strived to make the topics of health, science and literacy more accessible and relevant for youth while still aligned with the teachings of LBUSD. In addition, LLB planned activities to help campers learn about topics that have been cut or are underfunded at school, such as art and nutrition. The LLBs inventive plans for delivering lessons made the kids more school ready, engaged and motivated to learn. Working with DAYS staff, the camp participants took part in classroom education, field trips, and multi-media experiences that make each subject interesting and exciting. Working together, they developed the summer camp curriculum, scheduled the field trips to The Page Museum at The La Br”

Working together, they developed the summer camp curriculum, scheduled the field trips to The Page Museum at The La Br |
