Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The Literacy Projects (TLP) mission is to eliminate the literacy gap of emerging second graders who are functionally illiterate. Our vision is to remove the impediment of illiteracy from the lives of our most vulnerable children with the help of teachers, volunteers, mentors and role models. It is our hope that every second grade student is given the chance to have a solid foundation of English skills to advance their literacy development. This critical age, referred to as the literacy gap, is when a child becomes equipped with literacy skills that last a lifetime. To accomplish its mission, TLP accesses and enhances key phonic skills among struggling readers in second grade; promotes learning in a fun, social and interactive environment; uses proven methods to maximize the learning experience; and fosters self-sufficiency and economic success through academic and attitudinal achievement. TLP offers a comprehensive instructional program that improves both academic and attitudinal level

The Literacy Projects (TLP) mission is to eliminate the literacy gap of emerging, under-served, second graders who are functionally illiterate. Our vision is to remove the impediment of illiteracy from the lives of our most vulnerable children with the help of teachers, volunteers, mentors and role models. We will continue to grow organically while developing new strategies, products and tools that will be saleable, verifiable, and sustainable. And, we will strive to foster in our children the life-long love of reading, for it is the doorway to learning and achieving the American Dream. Our reading program, unlike any other, will enable children to catch up to their peers by the crucial third-grade literacy milestone and prepare children's literacy skills to "ease into" rather than struggle with the Common Core Standards. Giving the ability to participate in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programming.Founded in 2009, The Literacy Projects proven track record has helpe

Goals:Target specific markets with low literacy rates, disadvantaged youth in Title 1, at-risk and levels 3-5 schools of the Performance Improvement (PI);Provide a highly cost effective, user friendly and easily comprehensible learning methodIncrease the learning experience using proven, scientific methods;Provide Master Teachers as highly specialized administrators;Provide pre- and post-testing to substantiate the success rate;Ensure literacy for the crucial third-grade literacy milestone; and Foster long-term self-sufficiency and economic success.Programming:The Literacy Project (TLP) offers a comprehensive instructional program that improves both academic and attitudinal levels of students performing far below English proficiency standards. TLP accesses and enhances key phonic skills; promotes learning in a fun, socially interactive and collaborative learning environment. TLPs reading program fosters self-sufficiency and economic success through academic and attitudinal achievement. The academic segment utilizes The New Phonics Game, a proprietary reading product which was co-developed by The Regents of the University of California. The 30-hour program, five days weekly during daytime classroom instruction, is administered by TLPs highly credentialed Master Teachers. The program is provided at no cost to both the school and at-risk students in the second and third grade. The program teaches the fundamental principles of phonics and literacy in all three learning modalitiesauditory, visual and tactilecritical to children with varying learning styles. TLP conducts four teaching cycles each school year, graduating 72 students per school annually. The primary advantage of The Literacy Projects reading program is the focus on helping students augment their classroom instruction by practicing essential reading skills in a unique and stimulating way, thus effectively extending the instructional day to ensure mastery of the English Language.

IRS990/Desc0The Literacy Project has an astounding proven track record since its inception in 2009.Through strategic pre- and post-testing, both academic and attitudinal, The Literacy Project program proves significant, measurable growth in phonics, word decoding, word identification, English fluency, and reading which increases self-confidence and self-esteem of reading skills. Attitudinal pre- and post-testing is based upon a nationally acclaimed assessment method. In 2012, the Orange County Department of Educations (OCDE), Evaluation, Data and Assessment Center (EDAC) completed an independent review of the program. The Executive Data Summary concluded, "Tested students began the program with lower reading skills than the comparison group and tested significantly higher than non-participating students at the end of the program. Despite different grades, ages and schools, participating students consistently out-performed their classmates who were not enrolled in the reading program. Participating students improved an average of three-fourths a grade level or equivalent to seven months of classroom instruction over the course of TLPs 30-hour literacy program. The results of this evaluation proved that the program provides success and measurable improvement through both academic and attitudinal aspects. Participants started the program with a reading proficiency level below 25% of their non-participating peers. The program increased the participants phonetic skills by an average of 76% and results demonstrated reading proficiency nearly identical to their peers which means TLPs program succeeded in bridging their literacy gap. This is a significant increase when compared to the performance of the comparison group. In some cases, studies show that the participant outscored the control group (non-participant) as much as 129%. An average of 58% recorded a reading proficiency ABOVE their peer group. In the post-program attitudinal survey, significant measurable results indicated that:Over 80% reported that reading was more enjoyableOver 80% felt they had become better readersOver 60% liked school moreOver 70% felt their grades were improvingOver 75% reported that reading better had made school more fun

IRS990/MissionDesc0The Literacy Projects (TLP) mission is to eliminate the literacy gap of emerging, under-served, second graders who are functionally illiterate.
