Mission

ACLU Foundation of San Diego & Imperial Counties, Inc. (the Foundation) is a California Nonprofit Corporation (exempt under Section 501(c)(3)) incorporated on December 23, 1988. The Foundation works to protect and expand fairness, equity, and freedom through community engagement, building power, policy advocacy, and impact litigation.

The Foundation fights for individual rights and fundamental freedoms for all. The Foundation's activities include fostering, protecting, extending and obtaining civil liberty rights through public education, litigation, research and other action.

The executive director's performance is evaluated annually by the board. The executive committee reviews the evaluations and comparable salary data and recommends compensation to the board. Upon board approval, a memo documenting the compensation change is provided to the business manager for payroll/personnel purposes.

Financial Statement Notes

Part V, Line 4: Intended uses of the endowment fund.

The purpose of the trust is to build an enduring endowment to carry out the work of the foundations in protecting, preserving and expanding the civil liberties of all persons throughout the united states.

Part X : FIN48 Footnote

The Foundation is a public charity and is exempt from income taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and Section 23701(d) of the California Revenue and Taxation Code. The Organization believes that it has appropriate support for any tax positions taken, and as such, does not have any uncertain tax positions that are material to the financial statements. The Foundation is not a private foundation.The Foundations Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax for the years ended March 31, 2015, 2014, 2013, and 2012 are subject to examination by the Internal Revenue Service and State taxing authorities, generally three to four years after the returns were filed.
