Activity 2

The homeless prevention program helps families avoid homelessness. Families forward provides low income families with access to necessary services to help them maintain their stability, including: food assistance, counseling, employment coaching, rental assistance and seasonal supportive programs. Our food pantry, career coaching, backpack, community resource fair, thanksgiving and adopt a family programs are included as part of homeless prevention. Keeping families in their home during a time of crisis is preferred when possible to avoid homelessness. This year, 65 families received rental assistance. The food pantry, staffed by volunteers, distributed to 7,022 individuals an estimated $800,000 worth of food last year. 27,634 bags of food were distributed. An average of 445 families received food each month. More than 248 community food drives were held and many other donations were made by local businesses. The career coaching program helped 151 individuals develop the critical skills they need to find a job and increase their income. Families forward supported education by distributing backpacks full of school supplies and clothing to 936 children in grades k-12. The community resource fair brought together 57 leading service providers to offer free health screenings, legal advice, financial counseling, workshops, and children's activities to 786 children and adults. For the thanksgiving program, over 700 families received baskets of donated holiday food prepared and distributed by volunteers. For the adopt a family program, through the enormous generosity of the community, over 1,400 children (nearly 600 families) received gifts for the holidays.

Activity 3

The transitional housing program provides homeless families with greater needs more comprehensive programs, more time and greater assistance in transitioning from homelessness to living independently. Families forward has twenty-eight condominiums where these families can live for approximately one year and receive intensive supportive services before moving into permanent housing. This year 52 families, 166 children and their parents, were placed in homes and received extensive support services. 83% of these families gained the life skills and resources they needed to move to permanent housing after completing the program. Donations from local families and businesses provide household items for volunteers to prepare the homes for each family.
