Iapf protects endangered wildlife and ecosystems by conducting anti-poaching operations, delivering ranger training, supplying equipment and technological solutions, and providing critical project management and administrative support to communities working to prevent poaching and illegal parts trafficking (smuggling).local empowerment and engagement are critical to reducing wildlife crime. Iapf's community-focused operations are proving to be more effective and enduring than the militarized, adversarial anti-poaching tactics of the past. Our rangers are armed, and trained in military and policing skills, but - importantly - they are also trained in communication, de-escalation, etc., and are a genuine part of the communities in which they work. Villages where iapf operates are given opportunities and incentives to "be the solution" - and they are responding magnificently.

AKASHINGA: EARLY IN THE YEAR WE DEVELOPED THE CONCEPT OF A PROGRAM TO PROTECT ANIMALS AND ECOSYSTEMS WHILE EMPOWERING LOCAL WOMEN AND SUPPORTING AREA ECONOMIES. IN AUGUST 2017, CONCEPT BECAME REALITY WITH THE RECRUITMENT OF 32 LOCAL WOMEN IN ZIMBABWE'S LOWER ZAMBEZI VALLEY. ALL THESE WOMEN ARE SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE, THE SEX TRADE, AND MORE; DESPITE (OR PERHAPS BECAUSE OF) THEIR OWN VIOLENT PASTS, THEY HAVE CHOSEN TO DEFEND ANOTHER SPECIES. THESE STRONG, CAPABLE WOMEN HAVE ALSO PROVEN THEMSELVES TO BE BRAVE-WHICH IS WHAT "AKASHINGA" MEANS: "THE BRAVE ONES" IN THE LOCAL SHONA LANGUAGE. THE GROUP COMPLETED BASIC (RANGER) TRAINING IN LATE OCTOBER AND MADE 24 ARRESTS BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR. EXCELLENT RESULTS, AND THEY'VE ONLY STARTED! TRAINING, ACTIVE PATROLS, AND PROGRAM REFINEMENT CONTINUE, AS DO PLANS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A BETTER FACILITY AND EVENTUAL EXPANSION INTO OTHER REGIONS. 2.) GREATER LEBOMBO CONSERVANCY (GLC): GLC, AN AREA OF 2,483 KM2, IS ONE OF THE MOST CRITICAL PIECES OF RHINO CONSERVATION LAND ON THE PLANET. IT'S ALL THAT STANDS BETWEEN THE WORLD'S HIGHEST CONCENTRATIONS OF RHINO (IN KRUGER NATIONAL PARK, "KNP") AND THE HIGHEST CONCENTRATION OF RHINO POACHING SYNDICATES, BASED MOZAMBIQUE ADJOINING KNP. EACH YEAR KNP ACCOUNTS FOR MORE THAN HALF OF SOUTH AFRICA'S POACHED RHINO. IAPF'S RANGER TRAINING, PROVISION OF EQUIPMENT, AND MANAGEMENT OVERSIGHT OF THIS PROJECT HAS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED THE NUMBER OF RHINOS LOST TO POACHING IN KNP BY DISRUPTING POACHING ACTIVITIES. OUR BUFFER ON THE EASTERN SIDE OF KNP FORCES POACHERS TO USE MORE EXPOSED AND WELL-POLICED ROUTES - DRAMATICALLY INCREASING ARRESTS BY RANGERS BEFORE POACHERS CAN FIND AT-RISK ANIMALS. IN 2017, IAPF-SUPPORTED OPERATIONS PROTECTED APPROXIMATELY 120,000 ACRES OF CRITICAL RHINO HABITAT IN MOZAMBIQUE, AND INDIRECTLY PROTECTED ANOTHER 400,000 ACRES ACROSS THE BORDER IN KNP. SINCE IAPF BEGAN OPERATIONS HERE IN MID-2015, OBSERVED POACHING INCIDENTS IN KNP ADJACENT TO OUR AREAS OF OPERATION HAVE DECLINED BY OVER 80%. 3.) SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS: A LESS DISCUSSED PROGRAM, THIS WORK FOCUSES ON THE WILDLIFE SUPPLY CHAIN ACROSS SOUTHERN AFRICA RATHER THAN POACHERS ON THE GROUND. SI CONDUCTS CROSS-BORDER WILDLIFE CRIME INFORMATION GATHERING WITH THE INTENT OF PROSECUTING CRIMES AGAINST THE KEY FIGURES INVOLVED. DUE TO THE SENSITIVE NATURE OF THIS PROGRAM WE DON'T SHARE MANY DETAILS, BUT WE CONDUCT INVESTIGATIONS INTO SOME OF THE HIGHEST LEVEL "PEOPLE OF INTEREST" IN THE POACHING AND ILLEGAL ANIMAL/PARTS TRAFFICKING SYNDICATES, AND DISCRETELY SHARE THAT INFORMATION WITH PEOPLE IN POSITIONS TO MAKE ARRESTS. THE UNSUNG HEROES CONDUCTING THIS WORK ARE LITERALLY RISKING THEIR LIVES TO PROTECT ENDANGERED SPECIES. 4.) VICTORIA FALLS: SITUATED ON THE STANLEY & LIVINGSTONE PRIVATE GAME RESERVE JUST OUTSIDE OF VICTORIA FALLS, ZIMBABWE, IAPF HAS BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR MANAGEMENT OF SECURITY AND ANTI-POACHING HERE SINCE 2010. UNDER IAPF'S WATCH, NOT ONE ANIMAL HAS BEEN POACHED SINCE WE STARTED, DESPITE NUMEROUS INCIDENTS IN THE SURROUNDING AREAS AND IN THE RESERVE ITSELF. HOSTING THE REGION'S ONLY VIABLE BREEDING POPULATION OF BLACK RHINOS, NUMBERS HAVE MORE THAN DOUBLED IN RECENT YEARS, WITH BREEDING PAIRS NOW BEING SENT TO SELECT LOCATIONS AROUND THE COUNTRY TO REPOPULATE AREAS PREPARED TO RECEIVE THIS CRITICALLY ENDANGERED SPECIES. THE RESERVE IS ALSO HOME TO IAPF'S "GREEN ARMY" VOLUNTEER PROGRAM. THE GREEN ARMY IS A UNIQUE INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER PROGRAM IAPF RUNS IN ZIMBABWE. IT CONNECTS PEOPLE WITH CONSERVATION AND THE WORK OF RANGERS ON THE FRONTLINES. TO DATE, OVER 200 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN THROUGH IAPF'S GREEN ARMY PROGRAM, PROVIDING SUPPORT ON THE GROUND - AND THEN OFTEN CONTINUING THEIR INVOLVEMENT ONCE THEY RETURN HOME. 5.)
