Iapf protects endangered wildlife and ecosystems by conducting anti-poaching operations, delivering ranger training, supplying equipment and technological solutions, and providing critical project management and administrative support to communities working to prevent poaching and illegal parts trafficking (smuggling).local empowerment and engagement are critical to reducing wildlife crime. Iapf's community-focused operations are proving to be more effective and enduring than the militarized, adversarial anti-poaching tactics of the past. Our rangers are armed, and trained in military and policing skills, but - importantly - they are also trained in communication, de-escalation, etc., and are a genuine part of the communities in which they work. Villages where iapf operates are given opportunities and incentives to "be the solution" - and they are responding magnificently.
Across africa, species such as elephants, rhinos, pangolins, and lions are being illegally killed at an alarming rate for their body parts. Much of this poaching and trafficking is done by the same organized crime networks moving drugs and weapons. They use military tactics and equipment to conduct their trade. In the cross-fire, many undertrained and poorly equipped rangers are killed or injured. Iapf protects endangered wildlife and ecosystems by conducting anti-poaching operations, delivering ranger training, supplying equipment and technological solutions, and providing critical project management and administrative support to entities preventing poaching and parts trafficking.local empowerment and engagement play a critical role in reducing wildlife crime. EACH YEAR KNP ACCOUNTS FOR MORE THAN HALF OF SOUTH AFRICA'S POACHED RHINO. IAPF'S RANGER TRAINING, PROVISION OF EQUIPMENT, AND MANAGEMENT OVERSIGHT OF THIS PROJECT HAS SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED THE NUMBER OF RHINOS LOST TO POACHING IN KNP BY DISRUPTING POACHING ACTIVITIES. OUR BUFFER ON THE EASTERN SIDE OF KNP FORCES POACHERS TO USE MORE EXPOSED AND WELL-POLICED ROUTES - DRAMATICALLY INCREASING ARRESTS BY RANGERS BEFORE POACHERS CAN FIND AT-RISK ANIMALS. IN 2016, IAPF-SUPPORTED OPERATIONS PROTECTED APPROXIMATELY 120,000 ACRES OF CRITICAL RHINO HABITAT IN MOZAMBIQUE, AND INDIRECTLY PROTECTED ANOTHER 400,000 ACRES ACROSS THE BORDER IN KNP. SINCE IAPF BEGAN OPERATIONS HERE IN MID-2015, OBSERVED POACHING INCIDENTS IN KNP ADJACENT TO OUR AREAS OF OPERATION HAVE DECLINED BY OVER 80%. LEADRANGER: INITIATED THIS YEAR, THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES ADVANCED TRAINING TO ACTIVE (OFTEN SENIOR) RANGERS, OFFERING CUSTOMIZED CURRICULUM ACCORDING TO THEIR HOME UNIT'S NEEDS. TRAINING SUBJECTS INCLUDED THINGS LIKE: INTEGRATION OF UNARMED COMMUNITY SCOUTS AND ARMED RANGERS INTO UNIFIED PATROLS; TRACKING; PROCESSING WILDLIFE CRIME SCENES AND INTELLIGENCE GATHERING; TACTICAL PURSUIT OPERATIONS; EMERGENCY PROCEDURES AND TACTICAL FIELD CARE; COMMAND AND CONTROL; LAW ENFORCEMENT DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS, AND MORE. WE WORK WITH GOVERNMENT AGENCIES AND NGOS TO DETERMINE AND MEET THEIR UNIQUE TRAINING NEEDS. IMPORTANTLY, WE ALSO TRAIN SOME STUDENTS WITHIN EACH COHORT TO INSTRUCTOR LEVEL, SO THEY CAN TRAIN OTHER RANGERS IN THEIR HOME UNITS UPON RETURN. THIS VASTLY ADDS TO UNITS' EXPERTISE AND CONSERVATION EFFECTIVENESS. VICTORIA FALLS: SITUATED ON THE STANLEY & LIVINGSTONE PRIVATE GAME RESERVE JUST OUTSIDE OF VICTORIA FALLS, ZIMBABWE, IAPF HAS BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR MANAGEMENT OF SECURITY AND ANTI-POACHING HERE SINCE 2010. UNDER IAPF'S WATCH, NOT ONE ANIMAL HAS BEEN POACHED SINCE WE STARTED, DESPITE NUMEROUS INCIDENTS IN THE SURROUNDING AREAS AND IN THE RESERVE ITSELF. HOSTING THE REGION'S ONLY VIABLE BREEDING POPULATION OF BLACK RHINOS, NUMBERS HAVE MORE THAN DOUBLED IN RECENT YEARS, WITH BREEDING PAIRS NOW BEING SENT TO SELECT LOCATIONS AROUND THE COUNTRY TO REPOPULATE AREAS PREPARED TO RECEIVE THIS CRITICALLY ENDANGERED SPECIES. THE RESERVE IS ALSO HOME TO IAPF'S "GREEN ARMY" VOLUNTEER PROGRAM. THE GREEN ARMY IS A UNIQUE INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER PROGRAM IAPF RUNS IN ZIMBABWE.
