Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
ESPLANADE BLUFF RESTORATIONAs a founding member of the El Segundo Blue Butterfly Coalition, our shared goal is to restore habitat along the beach bluffs, from the Ballona Wetlands to the Palos Verdes Peninsula, with SBPC focusing on the Esplanade bluffs in Redondo Beach and Torrance. This transformational work continues in collaboration with US Fish & Wildlife Service, Los Angeles Conservation Corps, and community members, as we continue to restore habitat on the Esplanade Bluff.$35,953$36,695
HOPKINS WILDERNESS PARK RESTORATIONSince 2017, SBPC has been working with the City of Redondo Beach, youth groups, and teams of community members to rewild portions of Hopkins Wilderness Park. We host year-round opportunities in the park that help people connect with nature, learn, and make a difference. SBPC also hosts an annual Earth Day Celebration at the park.$15,838$21,563
HERMOSA VALLEY GREENBELT TRAIL RESTORATIONSBPC began work with the City of Hermosa Beach in 2022 to provide native pollinator plants to support butterflies. A year later, the project resulted in a lovely super bloom and educational opportunities as well as collaborations with local organizations. The work continues to expand into new areas of the Greenbelt.$12,665$12,141
REDONDO BEACH COMMUNITY GARDENSSBPC opened the FIRST Redondo Beach Community Garden at Alta Vista Park June 2023. Work continues with community partners, volunteers, and residents to develop educational programming and to open a second location in North Redondo.$3,876$2,886
SBPC SCHOLARSHIP FUNDSBPC continues to sponsor a scholarship at Redondo Union High School with an emphasis on students planning to major in environmental science and/or have volunteered in environmental organizations during high school.-$2,000
POLLINATOR GARDENSSBPC collaborates with schools and youth organizations, like the Girl Scouts, to plant pollinator gardens on school campuses and sites throughout the South Bay. These gardens are havens for breeding butterflies and are an excellent educational tool for students.$848$369
ALONDRA PARK ISLANDIn 1998 an El Camino College professor founded a California native plant garden on the Alondra Park island. SBPC, joined the effort in 2022 to increase volunteer workdays and continue the restoration of the Alondra Park Island Native Garden.$24$193
SBPC CERTIFIED NATIVE HABITAT PROGRAMProperty owners play an important role in creating patch habitats for endangered pollinators. By converting common landscaping into certified native habitat, yards become islands of habitat in a growing network of wilderness throughout the South Bay.$25-
ESPLANADE BLUFF GARDENThe Esplanade Bluff Garden is located west of the Esplanade, between Avenue A and Knob Hill Avenue, on a small piece of property owned by the County of Los Angeles, which overlooks the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Although the parcel had some drought-tolerant landscaping, it was not being adequately maintained and it did not provide habitat for California native species. In 2020, SBPC saw this site as an opportunity to support native wildlife and pollinators by transforming the garden into a hybrid native garden, with an emphasis on pollinator-friendly plant species.--
STUDENT AMBASSADORSSBPC partners with students, educators, environmental specialists, and local professionals to provide outdoor educational opportunities, resources, and project experience to students and community members interested in the local ecology. Participants of all ages learn valuable skills in conservation while making a difference in their own communities through programs such as the Junior Urban Naturalist Program and the Student Ambassador Collective.--
