In July 2013 we held our first open house ever and had 27 people attend representing local government, businesses, education, churches and interested individuals. The board of directors was present to answer any questions about our internal structure, finances, mission, etc. And since we are a food pantry, we served great food! The day after the open house, we received a call from a local produce warehouse. They were offering their #2 produce for us to distribute. That was the beginning of a beautiful collaboration. Over the fiscal period 36,000 pounds of useable produce was cleaned, displayed and distributed. Feedback from clients has been very positive. They love having fresh food to offer their families, and we all enjoy the conversations that develop (recipes, nutrition, vegetable identification, etc.). SFA had been purchasing produce, but we were not able to match the abundance that we receive from General Produce at no cost. This arrangement has allowed us to save money and offer more to our clients. In September of 2013 we began allowing clients to pick which foods they will take home. Before that date, we had been preparing the boxes before distribution started and marked them according to family size. With the new system, we print a pick list of what foods are available that week and separate them on the sheet (protein sources, canned soups/stews, vegetables, fruits, breakfast foods, etc.). Due to the abundance of fresh food that we have to offer, a new program was started in January 2014. Simply called "Produce Only," we allow and encourage our clients to visit weekly for produce only. This is not counted toward their six boxes of emergency food per year (what our budget currently allows us to offer). Each emergency box is a three-day supply of food that is adjusted to the size of their family. Feedback for this program is also positive, as the produce allows people to stretch the staples they may already have and allows more options for creating a healthy meal. By the end of the fiscal period, our agency had served 1,165 boxes of emergency food to 2,346 residents. This was accomplished with a total of 326 volunteer hours and 26 different agencies providing both cash and in-kind donations. Our nutrition support program for low-income clients is becoming more popular with clients and supporters alike. We aim to truly nourish our at-risk neighbors, not just fill their bellies.$87,059-
