Activity 2

Natural gas: pennfuture continued its work on ensuring that natural gas resources are developed in an environmentally sound manner. This included litigation of cases involving the improper permits by the state department of environmental protection that had the potential to adversely impact air and water resources in pennsylvania. Pennfuture participated in shale gas roundtables and think tank meetings that focused on development of standards of environmental excellence to be met in developing shale gas. Pennfuture developed and implemented policies designed to ensure conservation of public lands, such as state parks and game lands, during development of these resources. Pennfuture promoted education about the shale gas industry, including producing a citizens guide that explains the laws regulating the development of shale gas in pennsylvania.

Activity 3

Water: pennfuture developed and led a comprehensive campaign in philadelphia designed to protect and conserve surface water resources within the city, focusing especially on storm water runoff and riparian buffers. Pennfuture initiated a number of litigation cases across pennsylvania that focus on protection of designated high quality watersheds. Pennfuture developed and implemented policies designed to reduce nutrient loading within the chesapeake bay watershed, with the long-term goal of enhancing and improving the water quality of pennsylvania interior streams and the chesapeake bay. Pennfuture also brought a challenge in the pittsburgh area to a development that did not properly implement the city's green storm water management ordinance. Pennfuture continued implementing policies and initiating litigation across pennsylvania in order to ensure that acid mine discharges from active and abandoned mines do not harm pennsylvanias streams.
