Mission

Hand is a regional membership association dedicated to supporting the community development industry in its efforts to increase the supply of affordable housing in the washington, d.c. Metropolitan area. Through education, engagement and training, hand builds the capacity of its diverse membership comprised of nonprofit and for-profit housing developers, resident service providers, lenders, government agencies, policy analysts and others, to support the development of sustainable communities for people and families at all income levels.

The organization also hosted its Holiday Mixer designed to provide members opportunities to network and cultivate vital partnerships. in addition, its Annual Meeting & Housing Expo where over 1,000 members and partners attended to witness the presentation of the HAND Housing Awards and hear critical updates pertaining to the metropolitan affordable housing industry. Other accomplishments include: Developed 2013-2016 Strategic Plan; Increased Membership 20 percent; Issued $10-$1,000 matching internship grants and over 40 Training Grants to members; Provided Discounts to Attend Industry Conferences and Seminars; Launched new website, www.HANDHousing.org and Social Media Vehicles; Issued Weekly Newsletter; and Conducted Children's Art Contest highlighting HAND nonprofit members who conduct resident services.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Communications Action Network (CAN) was launched in September 2012 as a low cost high impact Washington, DC regional communications campaign sharing this primary message - Our Region Thrives When There Are Housing Opportunities For People Of All Incomes. The founding members of CAN are BB&T, Housing Association of Nonprofit Developers (HAND), the Coalition for Non Profit Housing and Economic Development (CNHED) and Northern Virginia Affordable Housing Alliance (NVAHA). The model for CAN is primarily a volunteer based network with the assistance of professionals for strategic input and some operational support. HAND currently serves as the fiscal agent for CAN. The CAN network is engaging communications professionals from the region's non profit and business sector and state and local government to compile and communicate information about new development and programs, research and best practices with the ultimate goal of sharing positive stories with media outlets, highlighting the economic and social benefits of affordable housing developments and programs in the region.
