Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

A draft of the form 990 is provided electronically to all members of the board of directors for review prior to filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Sense's conflict-of-interest policy applies to all employees, board members, and covered family members, requiring disclosure of any financial interests and prohibiting participation in decisions where such interests exist. The governing board or its committees determine whether a conflict exists and review any actual conflicts, with the interested person recused from related discussions and voting. Disinterested members may investigate alternatives, and any approved transaction must be fair, reasonable, and in sense's best interest. The policy also prohibits accepting gratuities or items of value from contractors, and violations may result in disciplinary action, including suspension or dismissal.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The school board determines the compensation for key employees and officers based on performance and market comparisons.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization's governing documents are made available to the public upon request.

Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 2C:

The organization's board of directors assumes the oversight of the audit and selection of an independent accountant. The selection and review process has not changed from the previous year.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The school received a determination from the u.s. Treasury department stating it qualifies under the provisions of section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code as a tax-exempt organization; however, the school would be subject to tax on income unrelated to its tax-exempt purpose. For the years ended june 30, 2025 and 2024, no accounting for federal and state income taxes was required to be included in the accompanying financial statements. Professional accounting standards require the school to recognize a tax liability only if it is more likely than not the tax position would not be sustained in a tax examination, with a tax examination being presumed to occur. The amount recognized is the largest amount of tax liability greater than 50% likely of being realized on examination. For tax positions not meeting the more-likely-than-not test, no tax liability is recorded. The school examined this issue and determined there are no material contingent tax liabilities or questionable tax positions. Tax years ended after june 30, 2021 are open to audit for both federal and state purposes.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0THROUGH OUR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT GRANT, SENSE CHARTER SCHOOL PROVIDES A COMPREHENSIVE RANGE OF SUPPORTS TO MEET STUDENTS' ACADEMIC, SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL, AND DEVELOPMENTAL NEEDS. WE OFFER ONE-ON-ONE AND SMALL GROUP TUTORING BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER SCHOOL, AS WELL AS PEER TUTORING PROGRAMS LIKE CADET TEACHING FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL. OUR MULTI-TIERED SYSTEM OF SUPPORTS (MTSS) ENSURES REGULAR COLLABORATION TO IDENTIFY AND ADDRESS STUDENT NEEDS, INCLUDING EARLY INTERVENTION THROUGH SCREENERS FOR DYSLEXIA, HIGH ABILITY, AND KINDERGARTEN READINESS. EXTENDED LEARNING IS OFFERED DURING HOLIDAYS AND SUMMER TO PREVENT LEARNING LOSS. SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING IS INTEGRATED ACROSS THE CURRICULUM, COMPLEMENTED BY ACCESS TO COUNSELING AND MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES. WE PROMOTE HEALTH AND WELLNESS THROUGH PHYSICAL EDUCATION, CLUBS, SPORTS, AND INITIATIVES LIKE FRESH FRUIT AND VEGETABLE, ALONGSIDE LESSONS ON NUTRITION AND LIFESTYLE. ADDITIONALLY, STUDENTS BUILD ESSENTIAL LIFE SKILLS AND CORE VALUES INCLUDING INTEGRITY, RESPECT, AND PERSEVERANCE THROUGH RESPONSIVE CLASSROOM PRACTICES.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/ExpenseAmt0300000
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0THROUGH THE CHARTER GRANT 3951, SENSE CHARTER SCHOOL PROVIDED ESSENTIAL TRANSPORTATION SERVICES TO ENSURE EQUITABLE ACCESS TO EDUCATION. WITH NINE BUS ROUTES, WE WERE ABLE TO SERVE APPROXIMATELY 250-275 STUDENTS, REPRESENTING NEARLY HALF OF OUR STUDENT BODY. AS A COMMUNITY SCHOOL WHERE THE MAJORITY OF STUDENTS QUALIFY FOR FREE LUNCH, TRANSPORTATION IS OFTEN A SIGNIFICANT BARRIER FOR FAMILIES. BY REMOVING THIS OBSTACLE, THE GRANT-FUNDED BUSES HELPED IMPROVE STUDENT ATTENDANCE, ENSURING THAT CHILDREN COULD CONSISTENTLY PARTICIPATE IN DAILY INSTRUCTION AND SCHOOL ACTIVITIES. INCREASED ATTENDANCE HAS DIRECTLY SUPPORTED ACADEMIC GROWTH, AS STUDENTS WHO ATTEND MORE REGULARLY DEMONSTRATE IMPROVED PERFORMANCE ON ASSESSMENTS. THIS INVESTMENT IN TRANSPORTATION NOT ONLY STRENGTHENED STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT BUT ALSO REINFORCED OUR MISSION OF PROVIDING ALL CHILDREN, REGARDLESS OF CIRCUMSTANCE, WITH RELIABLE ACCESS TO HIGH-QUALITY EDUCATION.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/ExpenseAmt0471625
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0THE SCHOOL SERVED APPROXIMATELY 580 STUDENTS IN GRADES KINDERGARTEN THROUGH EIGHTH DURING THE 2024-2025SCHOOL YEAR.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0THE SCHOOL RECEIVED A DETERMINATION FROM THE U.S.
