Mission

The mission as a premier regional center for the performing arts is to enrich cultural life with a wide diversity of live entertainment, arts, and education. Tateuchi Center will stimulate the arts region wide, attract new audiences, heighten arts awareness and education, provide a performance home for select area arts organizations, and serve as a cultural center for eastside residents.

The mission of Tateuchi Center is to transform lives and enrich the community by presenting artistic, cultural, educational, and entertainment experiences of highest quality to all within its reach.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 2

In order to fulfill the reasonable efforts standard imposed upon reporting organizations in the form 990, Performing Arts Center Eastside prepared and distributed customized questionnaires to each of the individuals listed on Part VII of the core form. Each questionnaire contained the individuals name, title, a glossary of relevant terms, and specific questions applicable to compensation, business relationships with the organization, and family and business relationships with other listed individuals. Each individual was asked to answer the questions, sign and date the questionnaire and return it to the organization by a specified date. The organization transmitted the questionnaires to the individuals by mail. It followed up with individuals that did not respond by the specified date.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

A complete form 990 is provided to the entire board prior to filing. The finance committee of the board of directors reviews the form 990 in detail and approves the return before it is filed.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

All members of the board of directors are required to complete a conflict of interest certification on an annual basis. Conflicts and potential conflicts are reviewed by the Executive Director and Governance Committee, and, if necessary, the Executive Committee. When a conflict of interest occurs, the conflicted party is not permitted to vote on the matter.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

Executive Director: a special committee of the board of directors was formed to lead the search for an Executive Director and set the initial compensation for the position. The committee employed the services of an executive search firm in addition to using comparability data to determine the compensation. This position was last hired in 2006. The Executive Director's contract has been renewed twice, most recently in 2013-2014. The Board Chair determined the compensation after a review of CEO compensation in comparable to nonprofit cultural organizations.

The organization owns a Steinway Concert Grand Model "D" piano, which it maintains for the purpose of public performance within the scope of its mission. This piano was originally handmade in Hamburg, Germany for Steinway's "Concert and Artist" series and has a illustrious provenance. Its quality is such that it will attract many of the world's greatest performing artists to our hall, providing a unique artistic experience for the community. Its serviceable life is unknown, but may easily exceed 150 years. As an asset, it will tend to increase, rather than decrease in value.

IRS990/Desc0Performing Arts Center Eastside(PACE) launched a $160 million capital campaign in 2007 to create a 2,000-seat regional performing arts facility intended to serve over 600,000 people living east of Lake Washington in King County, WA. Renamed "Tateuchi Center" to honor a $25 million pledge from the Tateuchi Foundation in 2010, the total Campaign goal has grown to $178 million, an increase that reflects the inflation of projected construction costs since 2007. The campaign goal includes land acquisition, design, and construction. Tateuchi Center will present artists of national and international stature, create a wide range of arts education opportunities, and provide a performance home to existing regional organizations. Funds are being raised from both public and private sector sources. Until the facility is completed, the organization's activities are limited to fundraising, planning, and project development.
