We also educate the community in proper animal care and provide low-cost spay/neuter and vaccination opportunities for resident's pets. We also provie tnr (trap-spay/neuter- vaccinate-relaese) assistance for feral cat communities.

“Total volunteer hours: 17,906. Total adoptions: 284 with douglas animal welfare group (dawg) being directly involved in 148 adoptions and assisting with many others.dawg covered 25,308 in medical expenses for the shelter animals. Dawg also covered 50,720 for community assistance programs including medical for pets of low income families, spay/neuter programs for family pets and trap and neuter for feral cat communities. Adoption assistance that includes maintaining a healthy and stimulating environment while awaiting adoption, providing training/socializing/grooming to improve adoptability, advertising and adoption events for public exosure, and post-adoption follow-ups and assistance to help keep adopted animals in their new homes: 23,874. During the past year, douglas animal welfare group started three new community assistance progrms. Our fix-a-family pet program offers a low- cost copay to individuals that have domestic dogs and/or cats in their homes that not been spayed or neutered. We contracted ith local veterinarians to give us a break in their charges so the owners pay a 30- 60 co-pay per dog or cat and dawg absorbs the 90-150 spay/neuter charge and the 15 rabies shot. This has resulted in the spay/neuter of nearly 100 domestic dogs and 150 domestic caats. Fix-a-pit bull is a similar program with a lower copay. Pit bulls make up a large portion of shelter animals and of those that are euthanized. They also typically have large litters (9-11 pups). Consequently, a special incentive is needed to control this population. This program is fairly new but has already resulted in over 50 spay/neuters and rabies vaccinations. We also began a tnr (trap/neuter or spay/release) program for community feral cats which has already shown an impact on controlling such populations. Our volunteers have kept the shelter open for adoptions on sundays for five years since county budget resulted in staffing cuts at the shelter and the shelter had to close on sundays. Our volunteers walk, socialize and train the dogs and clean, feed and socialize the cats 365 days a year.”
