DescriptionGrantsExpenses
During the 2014 year, Baseball Without Borders Foundation (BWB) was able to once again travel to Italy (from July 9 to July 22, 2014) with an 8 player roster (14U). Because we only were able to recruit 8 players to travel with BWB, we reached out to our friends from the baseball community in Barcelona, Spain. The Spain baseball community was able to provide BWB with an additional 5 players to combine into 1 formidable baseball team. This was a first time our organization was able reach out to another country to join forces with us. This joint US/Spain team participated in 7 games of tournament baseball in Rimini, Italy. We were given a celebrity welcome and also participated in Lunch, Dinner and closing ceremony festivities. These tournament games comprised of 12 teams from various part of Italy. While In Italy, our American players experienced the many sights, language, culture, finances and hospitality of our host country and the Torre Pedrera Falcons Baseball Club (Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Torre-Pedrera-Falcons-Baseball-Club/103445275300.) Prior to joining forces with the Spanish players, our American players were able to visit many parts of northern Italy before the tournament started. These players traveled to, experienced and learned about: Lugano, Switzerland, Belagio, Lake Como, Verona, San Martino BA, Venice, Bologna and Rimini, Italy. After we joined forces, our players were able to interact with these Spanish players along with players from the other teams, thus building friendship and interest about the United States, Spain and the sport of baseball around the world. Our combined team was celebrated and even given an ovation during the closing ceremonies in Rimini, Italy. Additionally, upon our return from Italy, our other 12 member 18U BWB team was able to travel to and play baseball in Nicaragua and Costa Rica (from: July 29 to August 9, 2014). In Nicaragua, we played 5 games of baseball and 1 game in Costa Rica. While in Nicaragua, we toured Managua, toured the countryside and visited the Masaya market and volcano, played 2 games against the Dennis Martinez Baseball Academy in Nindiri, played in La Paz Carazo, visited the nearby town of Granada and San Juan Del Sur. Our players experienced the land border immigration crossing process from Nicaragua into Costa Rica and vis-versa. In Costa Rica we played on a simple baseball field used by the local baseball community. This experience provided our players with an appreciation of their own fields back home. Lastly, with the assistance of United Airlines, our players were able to personally deliver 21 bags of new and used baseball equipment. Each team in Nicaragua and Costa Rica that we played was provided many bags of safety equipment. This 12 member team were able to interact with players from the other teams thus building friendship and interest about the United States, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and the sport of baseball. It should be noted that in La Paz Carazo, Nicaragua about 50 Nicaraguan players came out to play our American team. This was the first time an American team had played in this town, so players from the surrounding towns came out and also wanted to participate in our 9 inning, 4 hour game. Additional accomplishments: We were able to send a shipment of new and used baseball equipment to Nicaragua, Mexico, Romania, Kosovo, the Ukraine, South Africa and Spain. Due to a lack of financial support, we were unable to provided any scholarship to a past player during our annual Dan Salgado Scholarship Award Dinner.$50,764-
