Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The world is grappling with complex problems, including climate change, war, poverty, and ongoing human rights violations. These issues disproportionately impact women, particularly in developing countries. In nations recovering from conflict, the consequences of these global challenges are deeply gendered. An abundance of research indicates that when women participate equitably in decision-making, solutions to problems are more likely to impact all and last longer. To address gender inequality, SHE-CAN amplifies women's leadership by supporting low-opportunity women from post-conflict countries to attend U.S. colleges, providing mentorship and leadership training, and supporting them to return home to positively influence their home communities and nations. With combined power and collective influence, SHE-CAN scholars create change that reverberates globally.

SHE-CAN equips and inspires low-opportunity women from post-conflict and climate-challenged countries to become impact leaders who individually and collectively change their nations and create pathways for future female leaders.

IRS990/Desc0///Overview/// SHE-CAN's unique program focuses on low-opportunity young women from four post-conflict countries - Rwanda, Cambodia, Liberia, and Guatemala. It begins with recruiting the best and brightest low-opportunity potential leaders through an extensive in-country vetting process, matching each with a team of 5 U.S. mentors who help her secure a U.S. college scholarship and flourish on campus. Throughout college, SHE-CAN equips scholars with leadership training, provides support with entrepreneurial projects, and widens their network at home to ensure they return ready to drive meaningful change. SHE-CAN partners with top U.S. colleges that commit to awarding full tuition, room & board scholarships. SHE-CAN covers all non-scholarship costs (flights, health insurance, computers, etc.). This alleviates any potential financial burden on the family. Our scholars come from families at the bottom of the socioeconomic pyramid - market sellers, farmers, teachers and factory workers - with an average family income of $4,477 (USD) per year. 12 of our 19 Guatemalan scholars come from Indigenous communities. SHE-CAN breaks endemic cycles of inequity. Since 2011, 132 SHE-CAN scholars have won full scholarships to selective U.S. colleges totaling over $41M. Our graduates are now stepping into influential careers, including roles such as Minister of State at Rwanda's Ministry of Infrastructure, Operations and Strategies Specialist at One Acre Fund Rwanda to fight deforestation in Africa, and Engagement Program Manager at Energy Lab Cambodia, actively growing the development of clean energy markets in Southeast Asia. ///Our Programs and Activities/// //Extensive In-Country Vetting// The SHE-CAN journey begins with an online application followed by a rigorous two-week, in-country recruitment process led by 3 staff members and 5 mentors. With 500 applicants across Liberia, Guatemala, and Cambodia in 2024/2025, SHE-CAN's in-country presence and scholar demand continues to grow. //Mentor Program// This program lies at the heart of our mission, pairing each scholar with a dedicated team of 5 U.S. mentors. These mentors provide emotional and practical support throughout the scholar's five-year journey. Assistance includes college application guidance, leadership coaching, internship and employment advising, academics, budgeting, and health and wellness. Mentorships evolve into lifelong relationships with networking, job placement assistance, family connection, and shared impact. //College Preparation// SHE-CAN provides each scholar selected with extensive country-specific college preparation courses and college academic and language exams for her college application. //Scholarship Coalition Colleges// We have cultivated relationships with 37 colleges that have provided scholarships covering full tuition plus room & board. A total of 17 of the 37 supportive colleges have made long-term commitments to SHE-CAN, ensuring they will hold a scholarship for one or more SHE-CAN scholars year after year. These 17 colleges make up our SHE-CAN Scholarship Coalition and include: Babson College, Beloit College, Bentley University, Bennington College, Bucknell University, Denison University, Gettysburg College, Lafayette College, Loyola University Chicago, Muhlenberg College, Occidental College, Reed College, Rhodes College, Scripps College, Syracuse University, University of Portland, and University of San Francisco. //Leadership Training/Experience// Leadership preparation is integrated into every stage of our program. The first step to becoming a SHE-CAN scholar is to complete a leadership project at home. They also receive extensive leadership training, engage in public speaking events, and participate in goal setting with their mentors. The pinnacle of our leadership training is our annual three-day, in-person Leadership Summit that takes place in the SF Bay Area. The summit allows scholars to meet leaders from our network who inspire and motivate the

IRS990/MissionDesc0The world is grappling with complex problems, including climate change, war, poverty, and ongoing human rights violations.
