“Open A Door (OAD) builds female leadership in post-crisis countries by providing low-income, high potential young leaders with a pathway to US college scholarships. Through a team mentoring model, each girl in our program is matched with 5-6 professional US women who help her navigate the scholarship application process, support her while she is in school, and provide valuable networking resources to help her establish her career. As an organization OAD provides in-country SAT test preparation and funds all non-scholarship costs that the scholar's family cannot afford such as plane tickets, computers, books, health insurance, phones, dorm supplies and winter wardrobes. With OAD's support, scholars begin unleashing their potential to become a powerful force for change at home. Currently, OAD's mentoring teams have helped 20 female scholars from Afghanistan and Rwanda win highly competitive scholarships. In 2014, OAD expanded its program into Cambodia. The scholars are excelling at top-notch universities, including Harvard University, Smith College, Oberlin College, Lehigh University, University of California Berkeley, and Bennington College. OAD scholars are being accepted into promising internships at placements like Partners in Health, Women for Women, and congressional offices. Fortified by this experience, mentoring from a team of professionals, and a college education, students will return to their home countries equipped with the academic backgrounds, skills, and confidence to become influential leaders. Our organization is designed to leverage program resources and in 2014 we were able to leverage over $1 million in university commitments to the program and 6,000 volunteer hours which are not actual cash items. As a result, the organization appears to have a lower program expense ratio.”
