| Latest NewsFrom the Director - Monica MehanFall has arrived and UCLA is in full swing! Our nine residents range from 1st to 4th year undergrads, from premed to literature majors, and hail from all over California. This makes for lively dinner table conversation! Many more students, from all over LA, join our residents at Faith and Reason classes and weekly meditations, Thursday night Evenings of Conversation, ethics discussions, and study in our newly renovated library. Our outreach to high school girls is thriving as well. Stepping Up leadership program attendance has tripled! For more details, see the article on the back! Westfields facility was used to full capacity throughout the summer months. 18 young women gathered for their final training as Pathfinder camp counselors, helping to prepare all of the activities for the week-long camp. Avanti West leadership program attracted 13 high school girls for a demanding but rewarding week. A UC San Diego faculty member walked the girls through the college admission process. With their mentors, girls developed a mission statement. The group explored Los Angeles and enjoyed sports together on UCLAs campus. Several retreats and workshops for women of all ages also took place at Westfield this summer. The constant use of our facility means maintenance costs exceed our income from residence fees. Your support makes all the difference! We hope to see you at our Christmas party on December 22nd! ________________________________________________________________________________________________LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! This summers Lights! Camera! Action! media literacy program was a blockbuster hit! Participants traveled from San Francisco, Boston, MA and Silver Springs, MD to spend a week in Tinsletown. The small but cohesive group of young women benefitted from presentations by professionals in the entertainment industry including the director of the LA Opera and a young actress in the middle of multiple productions. Classes such as Television Production and Aesthetics and Beauty expanded horizons and honed critical thinking skills for our highly engaged participants. The schedule this year included attending the LA Film Festival for the screening of a documentary on the history and development of the casting profession. A tour of Sony Animation in Culver City also opened the girls eyes to the hard work and skill involved in each animated movie or television show. Keep your eyes open for the new brochure for our 2014 program, June 16th 23rd. Perhaps you know a young woman (senior in high school or college student) whose experience might reflect that of one of our past participants: I had so many intellectual questions about the media and Christians involved in it. Coming here truly opened my mind, not only answered my questions, but inspired me to, God willing, pursue this career!________________________________________________________________________________________________SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR SUPPPORTERS The Living Room Renovation Project was a success thanks to many generous contributions. Your financial support made it possible for us to upgrade our first floor common areas. Our residents and guests encounter a very attractive gathering place for our evenings of conversation and cultural events. We count on the financial contributions of our supporters. Westfield Residence is a 501 (c)3 organization. Contributions are tax deductible. We encourage you to set up an automatic payment with your bank for your monthly contribution to Westfield. For more information, please contact the Office of Cooperators: [email protected] or call (310)208-5797.________________________________________________________________________________________________STEPPING UP PROGRAM TRIPLES IN SIZE For the second year, Stepping Up, a leadership program for young women in 8th11th grade, was successfully launched in October. Participation has tripled, from 15 to 45 girls, who travel from all over Southern California for monthly meetings. This year we are offering separate programs for younger (Unit I - 8th & 9th grade) and older (Unit II - 10th & 11th grade) girls. The program is held at Walnut Grove Cultural Center in San Gabriel. Stepping Up helps young women grow in the confidence and skills they need to give direction to their lives, to discover a sense of purpose, to aspire to their personal best and to make positive contributions in all areas of life. Each participant is assigned a mentor with whom she meets once a month to review the topic presented and establish realistic personal goals for self-improvement. This has proven to be the most beneficial component of the program. When the girls set goals (with their mentors help) and then follow up the next month to assess how they have carried them out, they become engaged and committed participants, rather than passive recipients of information. The October session included a presentation and hands on activity for Unit I about Health and Wellness given by Maureen McCarthy RN, BSN and Erin Keith RN. Unit II delved into Financial Planning for Teens with financial planner Rebecca Chan. Next month we will be hearing from professionals on creating healthy and meaningful relationships (Unit II) and film appreciation (Unit I). As an added bonus, mothers who drive their daughters are invited to remain at Walnut Grove for discussions on topics relevant to marriage and family life. This month, 15 mothers discussed how to defend marriage with tact and charity. | - | - |
