The organization qualifies as a tax-exempt organization under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and, accordingly, is not subject to federal income tax. However, income from certain activities not directly related to the organization's tax-exempt purposes is subject to taxation as unrelated business income. JAY CIMINO, TRINIDAD NATIVE AND FORMER ALTAR BOY AT MOUNT CARMEL, WAS DISMAYED BY WHAT WAS HAPPENING TO THIS HISTORIC AND SACRED OLD CHURCH. IN 2007, JAY AND EMILY CIMINO BOUGHT THE PROPERTY AND AFTER INTENSIVE RESEARCH INTO THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY, THE CHURCH WAS RENOVATED AND REPURPOSED AND MT. CARMEL WELLNESS & COMMUNITY CENTER, A NON-PROFIT 501(C) 3, WAS BORN. RENOVATING THE HISTORIC OLD CHURCH INTO A MULTIPURPOSE-CAMPUS REQUIRED SOPHISTICATED ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN AND ENGINEERING. KIP HAMPDEN PROPERTIES, LLLP OVERSAW THE PROJECT AND EMPLOYED CTL/THOMPSON, INC. ENGINEERING FIRM WHOSE WORK ON THE PROJECT EARNED THE 2012 ACE ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE AWARD. INITIAL MEDICAL AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES COMMENCED IN 2011. IN 2017, MCWCC PARTNERED WITH SALUD FAMILY HEALTH CENTERS WHO TOOK OVER THE FULL SPECTRUM OF PHYSICAL AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CARE SERVICE, LEAVING MCWCC FREE TO FOCUS ON WELLNESS, CIVIC AND CULTURAL PROGRAMS AND EVENTS. TODAY ON THE MCWCC CAMPUS, ONE IS ABLE TO FIND PRIMARY CARE STAFFED BY FULLY CERTIFIED MEDICAL PERSONNEL COVERING BOTH PHYSICAL AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH NEEDS. PLANS ARE IN PLACE TO ADD A NUMBER OF OTHER SERVICES. PEDIATRIC DENTAL CARE WAS ADDED IN JANUARY OF 2020. ACCORDING TO QUICK FACTS FROM THE CENSUS BUREAU, LAS ANIMAS COUNTY HAS A POPULATION OF APPROXIMATELY 15,000 PEOPLE AROUND 17% ARE CLASSIFIED IN POVERTY AND OVER 11% OF PERSONS UNDER AGE 65 DO NOT HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE. THE STATISTICS FOR COLORADO ARE 9% IN POVERTY AND ONLY 8% UNDER AGE 65 DO NOT HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE. THE MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME FOR THE COUNTY IS ABOUT 55% OF WHAT THE MEDIAN HOUSEHOLD INCOME IS FOR ALL OF COLORADO. MCWCC STRIVES TO PROVIDE ACCESS TO HEALTH SERVICES AND SUPPORT THE COMMUNITY TO IMPROVE LIFE FOR THOSE STRUGGLING WITH POVERTY AND LACK OF HEALTH INSURANCE. IN 2024 MCWCC PROVIDED 22 WELLNESS PROGRAMS FREE OF CHARGE TO THE COMMUNITY BOTH IN PERSON AND VIRTUALLY. THERE WERE 2,985 VISITS TO THESE PROGRAMS WITH AGES RANGING FROM YOUTH TO SENIORS FOCUSED ON IMPROVING MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT. THESE PROGRAMS ARE SUPPORTED ENTIRELY BY THE TRINIDAD COMMUNITY AND ITS PRIVATE CITIZENS. MCWCC'S PURPOSE IS TO REPRESENT THE BROAD INTERESTS OF THE PUBLIC. IT DOES NOT REPRESENT PRIVATE INTERESTS OF A SMALL NUMBER OF DONORS. THE PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES OF MCWCC PROVIDE SERVICES DIRECTLY TO THE PUBLIC ON AN ONGOING BASIS AT NO COST TO THE PUBLIC. THESE PROGRAMS INCLUDE WELLNESS, PROGRAMS FOR STRENGTHENING AND MAINTAIN THE BODY, MANAGING CHRONIC ILLNESS, NUTRITION, TO INCLUDE YOGA, TAI CHI, CHRONIC PAIN, SELF-MANAGEMENT, DIABETES SCREENING, AND ACTIVITIES FOR TRINIDAD YOUTH, TO INCLUDE THE MT. CARMEL YOUTH ORCHESTRA AND YOUTH EXPLORER'S CAMP, AMONG OTHERS. MANY OF THE PARTICIPANTS IN THESE PROGRAMS ARE PUBLIC OFFICIALS AND COMMUNITY LEADERS IN ADDITION TO AVERAGE CITIZENS OF TRINIDAD. MCWCC'S ACTIVITIES APPEAL TO PEOPLE HAVING A BROAD COMMON INTEREST OR PURPOSE TO BENEFIT THE CITY OF TRINIDAD. MCWCC IS STRONGLY SUPPORTED BY THE LOCAL COMMUNITY BUT THIS SUPPORT DOES NOT RESULT IN A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF PUBLIC SUPPORT BECAUSE OF THE ECONOMIC CONDITIONS OF THE COMMUNITY. MCWCC ACTIVELY SOLICITS PUBLIC SUPPORT FROM INDIVIDUALS, BUSINESSES AND FOUNDATIONS BY EMPLOYING A PART-TIME GRANT WRITER AND HOLDING A GOLF TOURNAMENT TO RAISE MONEY FROM THE GENERAL PUBLIC ALONG WITH OTHER ACTIVITIES SUCH AS A SUMMER FESTIVAL. ITS BOARD OF MANAGERS CONSISTS OF SEVERAL INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE EITHER EMPLOYED BY OR DIRECTLY INVOLVED IN CITY OF TRINIDAD GOVERNMENTAL OPERATIONS. THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD, ED GRIEGO, IS THE HEAD OF THE TRINIDAD URBAN RENEWAL AUTHORITY AND A PAST CITY OF TRINIDAD COUNCIL MEMBER AND A MEMBER OF THE TRINIDAD HOUSING AUTHORITY.
