| Brotherhood, Inc. uses a model to change the paradigm that currently exists for young African-American men. Brotherhood seeks to change the paradigm by addressing the disparities young African American men face in three key areas: 1. Education, 2. Employment and 3. Incarceration. 1. Once the needs of the particular participant are identified, Brotherhood employs a variety of strategies. Brotherhood provides school supplies to its participants to decrease the worry of having to buy them. Brotherhood advocates for participants with the school they attend. Brotherhood provides counseling to its participants. Brotherhood helps its participants with their homework, and gives them one-on-one support to help them graduate. Brotherhood coordinates with high schools across the state to fulfill credit requirements for their participants' graduation. 2. The employment arm of Brotherhood, Inc. has the main goal of increasing access to gainful employment for its participants. Brotherhood employs a variety of strategies to this end. Brotherhood's main strategy is to increase the capacity of its participants. Brotherhood recognizes that the participants coming through the door have skills that can be translated into the business sector. This translation occurs by strengthening the participant's leadership skills in providing them with hands-on business experience. Another important strategy Brotherhood uses is to foster an entrepreneurial spirit. This not only encourages the organization's participants to look into owning their own business in the future, but it allows participants to give back to the organization one day by allowing future participants to work in their businesses. This model works only if young men buy into it and take advantage of the opportunities to which Brotherhood gives them access. 3. This arm of Brotherhood is important in keeping the participants out of trouble with the law. The first two arms of Brotherhood mostly suffice this arm of Brotherhood. When individuals are focused on graduating high school, and working their jobs, they are far less likely to get into trouble with the law. However, when the participants become involved with the criminal justice system, Brotherhood provides some coordination for avoiding any technical violations, increase coordination with the participant's parole officers to make sure they are in accordance with their release requirements, or advocate and support in other ways. Brotherhood has established a spirit of reciprocity among its participants. The program is set up for the participants to do community outreach work. In the future Brotherhood plans to coordinate social services better. Brotherhood plans to be a one-stop-shop for those services for participants in the areas of housing, employment, food, healthcare, etc We have fourteen board members. Although we have no paid full-time staff, there are four adult volunteers and law students from the Community Justice Project of the University of St Thomas School of Law who staff Brotherhood, Inc. on a daily and weekly basis. We also have a cadre of volunteers who work in all areas of Brotherhood, Inc. including finances, education, support services, technical consulting, and business training. We currently have seven paid, part-time employees of Brotherhood Brew, the young men who participate in our program and run Brotherhood Brew. During 2013 we as an organization engaged with an SVP consultant to develop an Organizational Strategy for Brotherhood, Inc. and its social enterprises. Other volunteers include our two coffee shop consultants initially hired through MIF of the St Paul Foundation, the SVP consulting team with whom we have been working in 2013, B & W Specialty Coffee Company in Minneapolis (our coffee roaster and ongoing business consultant), ASANDC for technical assistance, build-out and design, Catchafire consultants for social media, marketing, and technical support, and NDC our landlord for Brotherhood, Inc.'s office space. In summary, efforts have been enhanced through the development of networking resources with 14 local community organizations. And our social enterprise revenues are steadily increasing, paying for monthly overhead that includes wages, rent, insurance, utilities, and inventory. Additionally, Brotherhood Inc., in working the Neighborhood Development Corporation to expand its space, staffing and revenue capacity beginning February 2014. | $0 | $50,733 |
