Water-Culture Institute

Profile

The Water-Culture Institute promotes the sustainable management of our rivers, lakes, springs, and groundwater through the application of indigenous wisdom and cultural traditions that respect the rights of nature. Our premise is that the sustainability of water ecosystems requires an ethic that recognizes our sacred responsibility to the Earth. We work both locally and globally. Locally our focus is the American Southwest and particularly the Rio Grande Basin. Additional geographic areas where we plan to become active are (1) Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin and (2) East-Central India (Mahanadi River Basin). Globally we are cooperating with other international organizations to develop a global "water ethics charter" and to promote understanding among water professionals, policy decision-makers, and civil society, about the concept of "water ethics". Our message is that decisions about rivers, lakes, and other water ecosystems should be based on explicit ethical values.

WATER ETHICS INITIATIVE. The Water Ethics Initiative is the signature program of Water-Culture Institute (WCI) and has its own website (waterethics.org) and social media (Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn). Major activities during 2020 were limited to Zoom meetings and writing reports and articles. The WCI Director presented a keynote address on "Applying Water Ethics to the Management of Transboundary Aquifers" to the virtual conference on US-Mexico Transboundary Groundwater, Oct. 14-15, 2020, co-sponsored by Texas A&M, IMTA (Mexico) and the US-Mexico Permanent Forum on Binational Waters. The WCI Director also wrote two published reviews of books on water ethics, and three articles addressing the topics of (1) Geoethics, (2) Ethical water management, and (3) Indigenous water ethics. Other activities of the Water-Culture Institute during 2020 focused on researching and writing sections of an ongoing study of Indigenous Water Ethics and Sovereignty. This activity is being jointly undertaken with the Indigenous World Forum on Water and Peace and was initially supported by a grant from Christensen Fund, received in 2017 (and reported in our 2017 990EZ filing).$0$20,000
