“New programs for 2017/2018: this year we launched two new programs - wonder women, a public lecture and mentoring series featuring prominent women from the birmingham community in a small group setting (20-40 girls in 6th grade and up and their parents). These monthly lectures are open to the public and give girls a glimpse at the many different career opportunities available for women with the goal of helping girls find a career path that sparks an interest. The setting is informal and the girls have an opportunity to ask questions and get to know the women who are speaking. The other new program is a summer camp for girls entering 6th and 7th grade. We piloted the camp in summer 2017 and had 20 participants who learned about team building, using fashion to boost self-esteem, how to speak up for yourself, nutrition, and self-defense. We plan to build on the 2017 summer camp model and add additional ages for 2018. In addition to our programs, girlspring has worked diligently to develop relationships with groups that also believe in empowering women and girls. Girlspring has established itself as a respected entity in birmingham and has worked hard to create partnerships with like-minded organizations. We have built relationships and partnered with local entities such as the wellhouse, girls rock, children's policy council, the american association of university women birmingham branch, girls, inc., uab human rights institute, and the women's fund.”
