Activity 2
Assistance with cataract surgeries: as the mission of helpmesee is to eliminate cataract blindness, the number of msic surgeries performed is a key indicator of mission progress. In the reporting year - the first full year of the sponsorship - helpmesee successfully established 64 surgical partnerships that collectively performed 29,134 cataract surgeries, exceeding the original goal of 25,000. With an increasing number of surgical partners and the introduction of the msics training course, it will be possible to rapidly scale up the volume of cataract surgeries.
Activity 3
Technical assistance: define and develop manual small incision cataract surgery (msics) as a high quality surgical procedure to be delivered in high volume by trained surgeons. This includes surgical practice research, human subject research, surgical results reviews, the provision of physics-based data to support surgical procedures, force measurements and documentation of the anatomy and surgical response of the human eye. Results will be published to contribute to the general body of knowledge as well as to develop physics-based virtual reality models of the human eye for surgical training. Helpmesee has completed comprehensive documentation for msics and physics based model of the human eye. The helpmesee approach was also studied in a 2012 rand report.
