| THE WEST DES MOINES BUSINESS INCUBATOR WAS FOUNDED WITH A MISSION OF FOSTERING BUSINESS ENTERPRISES VIA THE CREATION OF AN ENTREPRENEURIAL "ECOSYSTEM" FOR EARLY-STAGE VENTURES. IT OFFERS A GATEWAY FOR BUSINESS-TO- BUSINESS-MINDED ENTREPRENEURS TO FORM SUCCESSFUL COMPANIES IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. AN ANCILLARY EFFECT OF THE ORGANIZATION'S EFFORT REVOLVES AROUND VITALITY IN THE WEST DES MOINES BUSINESS COMMUNITY, RETAIL CENTERS AND STARTUP SCENE. THINGS ARE MOVING. THE ENERGY IS CONTAGIOUS. PEOPLE ARE LANDING ON TARGET. REAL CONVERSATIONS ARE HAPPENING. KNOWLEDGE IS BEING TAKEN AND APPLIED IN AND AROUND THE CITY, THROUGHOUT SILICON PRAIRIE, AND ACROSS MULTIPLE INDUSTRIES. PEOPLE SPILLING OUTSIDE OF THE INCUBATOR AND INTO WEST DES MOINES NEIGHBORHOODS ALSO EQUATES TO HIGHER TRAFFIC COUNTS, ALONGSIDE THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF SALES AND COMMERCE AT LOCAL ESTABLISHMENTS. AT THE SAME TIME, FRESH EYES AND NEW BLOOD ARE BEING USHERED INTO THE CITY AS NEW BUSINESS RELATIONSHIPS ARE ESTABLISHED AND NURTURED - BOTH IN AND OUTSIDE OF THE OFFICE. LAUNCHING IN NOVEMBER 2010, THE INCUBATOR EXPANDED OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS AND CURRENTLY HOUSES 12 COMPANIES EMPLOYING 37 PEOPLE OUT OF ITS WESTOWN PARKWAY OFFICE. THESE COMPANIES EMPLOY A TOTAL OF 77 PEOPLE WHOM OFFICE OUT OF THE INCUBATOR - IN A FULL-TIME OR PART-TIME CAPACITY - OR ON A CONTRACT BASIS. THIS TRANSLATES INTO MORE THAN 385 JOBS IN THE LOCAL ECONOMY. THE INCUBATOR HAS ASSISTED UP TO 14 CLIENT ORGANIZATIONS AT A TIME - AT ONE POINT REPRESENTATIVE OF 87 EMPLOYEES AND CONTRACT EMPLOYEES THROUGHOUT THE GREATER DES MOINES AREA AND THE STATE OF IOWA. THE NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION FACILITATES ACCESS TO CENTRAL IOWA'S MANAGEMENT PROFESSIONALS AND ACADEMIC COMMUNITY THROUGH CORPORATIONS, EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS, SUBJECT-MATTER EXPERTS AND SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEURS. THE AMENITIES AVAILABLE TO EACH INCUBATOR CLIENT ARE MADE POSSIBLE VIA GENEROUS BACKING FROM THE CITY OF WEST DES MOINES, A 16-PERSON BOARD, DIRECTORS CLYDE EVANS AND JO ECKERT, AND PARTNERSHIPS MAINTAINED WITH AREA BUSINESSES, SUPPORTERS AND ENTREPRENEURIAL-MINDED VOLUNTEERS. THANKS TO THIS COLLABORATION, THE ACTUAL VALUE OF SERVICES AFFORDED TO EACH CLIENT CURRENTLY EQUATES TO MORE THAN 89,000 A YEAR, INCLUDING AFFORDABLE RENTS, 24/7 ACCESS TO A LOCKED OFFICE SPACE WITH OFFICE FURNITURE, A CONFERENCE ROOM, TRAINING ROOM, KITCHENETTE AND A 100 MBSP INTERNET CONNECTION AND OTHER UTILITIES. THE INCUBATOR HOSTS A VARIETY OF SPEAKERS AND WORKSHOPS AIMED AT INFORMING, EDUCATING AND CONNECTING ITS CLIENTS TO PROFESSIONAL CONSULTANTS AND SERVICES FROM LOCAL PROVIDERS. OWNERS AND THEIR EMPLOYEES ARE PROVIDED WITH ACCESS TO A NEARLY CONTINUOUS STREAM OF BUSINESS-TO-BUSINESS RESOURCES, INCLUDING REAL-TIME PRESENTATIONS BY OR DISCUSSIONS WITH PROFESSIONALS OPERATING IN THE FIELDS OF FINANCIAL SERVICES, BUSINESS COACHING, CONSULTING MARKETING AND MORE. THESE EFFORTS HAVE INCLUDED THOSE OF ATTORNEYS AND A CPA WITH DICKINSON LAW FIRM AND MCGOWEN, HURST, CLARK & SMITH, P.C., RESPECTIVELY, ON A MONTHLY BASIS AND AT NO COST TO INCUBATOR CLIENTS. OPEN HOUSES, RIBBON CUTTINGS, GRADUATIONS PARTIES AND ALTERNATIVE EVENTS TEND TO ATTRACT DOZENS OF - SOMETIMES MORE THAN 100 - PEOPLE. VISITORS OFTEN INCLUDE RESIDENTS, BUSINESS OWNERS, CIVIC LEADERS, YOUNG PROFESSIONALS AND THOSE EXPLORING OPPORTUNITIES IN THE WORKFORCE - ALONG WITH BUSINESS LEADERS, LOCAL OR STATE DIGNITARIES, SPECIAL GUESTS AND A HOST OF BRAND AMBASSADORS FROM ACROSS THE METRO AND THE WEST DES MOINES COMMUNITY. THEY HAVE A DIVERSE RANGE OF BACKGROUNDS IN EVERYTHING FROM SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, EDUCATION AND HEALTHCARE TO FINANCIAL SERVICES, REAL ESTATE, MANUFACTURING, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND MANY MORE. THE INCUBATOR'S QUARTERLY ROUNDTABLE COFFEE DISCUSSIONS PROVIDE YET ANOTHER FORUM FOR BUSINESS OWNERS TO ASK QUESTIONS, CONSIDER NEW IDEAS AND SHARE VALUABLE INFORMATION OR RESOURCES. AT THE SAME TIME, THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS INSTANCES OF INDIVIDUALS SHOWING UP ORGANICALLY AT A PLANNED EVENT OR IN THE "MIDDLE OF THE DAY" BECAUSE THEY HEARD THE INCUBATOR WAS A PLACE THEY COULD LEARN MORE ABOUT STARTING A BUSINESS, MAINTAINING A BUSINESS OR GROWING A BUSINESS IN THE AREA. FURTHERMORE, A GRASSROOTS NETWORKING ORGANIZATION - TIED DIRECTLY TO THE INCUBATOR AND ORGANIZED ON-SITE BY INCUBATOR CLIENT AND LOCAL SHOP HOP FOUNDER JADE HANDY - IS EXPOSING INDIVIDUALS TO NEW INNOVATIONS AND EXPERIENCES THAT ARE INTENDED TO DRIVE COMPANIES FORWARD WHILE FOSTERING A CULTURE OF ENTREPRENEURIALISM IN THE COMMUNITY. FOR INSTANCE, MORE THAN 320 INDIVIDUALS HAVE CYCLED THROUGH OR CONTINUE TO ATTEND THE BUSINESS INCUBATOR NETWORKING GROUP, OR B.I.N.G, SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN JULY 2014. TWO WEEKLY GATHERINGS INCLUDE THE B.I.N.G LUNCH & LEARN, A LUNCHEON DEDICATED TO HELPING SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS START AND GROW BY SHARING KNOWLEDGE, RESOURCES AND LEADS, AND B.I.N.G SWEAT EQUITY SATURDAY, A COLLABORATIVE WORKSHOP WHERE LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE WITH BUSINESSES OR BUSINESS STARTUP ASPIRATIONS CAN FIND HELP STARTING OR GROWING AT BUSINESS - WHILE OFFERING TO SHARE THEIR TIME AND EXPERTISE WITH OTHERS. THE INCUBATOR CONTINUES TO HATCH SUCCESSFUL COMPANIES WHILE CREATING SYNERGIES AMONG WEST DES MOINES RESIDENTS, BUSINESSES AND BRAND AMBASSADORS WHO PAINT THE COMMUNITY AS A GREAT PLACE TO START AND GROW A COMPANY. MEN, WOMEN AND ENTITIES OPERATING IN THE CITY HAVE FOUND VALUE IN ATTENDING VARIOUS EVENTS SUCH AS B.I.N.G WHILE CARVING OUT A PATH TO ESTABLISH THEMSELVES IN THE WESTERN SUBURBS. AS AN EXAMPLE, CLUB HERF, LLC, FOUNDED BY WEST DES MOINES-RESIDENT CHRISTOPHER THAYER, IS TOUTED IN SIMPLE TERMS AS A "DAY SPA FOR MEN." CHRISTOPHER HAS BEEN CONSIDERING SPACE FOR THE RETAIL CIGAR SHOP / SMOKING LOUNGE, FEATURING INDOOR GOLF SIMULATORS, IN WEST GLEN TOWN CENTER OR AN ALTERNATIVE LOCATION IN THE WEST DES MOINES-AREA. HE HAS BEEN ACTIVELY PARTICIPATING IN B.I.N.G. AND RELATED INCUBATOR NETWORKING EVENTS FOR THE PAST YEAR. CLIVE-BASED CHIROPRACTOR DR. LIZ SWEERS - A RECENT COLLEGE GRADUATE, OWNER OF A NEW BUSINESS, AND A RESIDENT OF WEST DES MOINES - HAS ALSO FOUND SUCCESS AT THE INCUBATOR. SHE NOTED THAT BUSINESS HAS TAKEN OFF THANKS TO THE INTRODUCTIONS AND REFERRALS DURING B.I.N.G. EVENTS. AT THE SAME TIME, CRUCIAL RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER STARTUP-CENTERED ORGANIZATIONS ARE BEING NURTURED AND MAINTAINED AS STAFF, SUPPORTERS AND VOLUNTEERS HELP CONNECT WEST DES MOINES TO NEW BUSINESS OR DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES THROUGHOUT IOWA. BEYOND PERSONALIZED APPEARANCES BY LT. GOV. KIM REYNOLDS AND IOWA ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY DIRECTOR DEBI DURHAM, WHO STOPPED BY AND SPOKE INDIVIDUALLY WITH EACH BUSINESS OWNER, INCUBATOR CLIENTS THIS PAST YEAR ALSO RECEIVED AN IMPROMPTU VISIT BY - AND PERSONALIZED CONFERENCE WITH - THE NATIONAL DIRECTOR AND A MIDWEST REGIONAL ADVOCATE OF THE U.S. SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION. THESE DIRECT OR INDIRECT CONTACTS OR AFFILIATIONS- ON BEHALF OF THE CITY AND CLIENTS OF THE INCUBATOR - INCLUDE A DIVERSE RANGE OF LOCAL AND STATEWIDE ORGANIZATIONS WITH A FOCUS ON BUILDING REGIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FROM AN IOWA POINT OF VIEW. FRIENDS OF THE ORGANIZATION INCLUDE, BUT ARE IN NO MEANS LIMITED TO, THE IOWA GOVERNOR'S OFFICE, THE IOWA DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, THE U.S. SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION, WEST DES MOINES CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, IOWA STARTUP ALLIANCE, THE TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATION OF IOWA, IASOURCELINK, GRAVITATE, SQUARE ONE, SIMPSON COLLEGE, AND THE LORENTZEN STUDENT HATCHERY AT DRAKE UNIVERSITY - TO NAME A FEW. ADDITIONALLY, THE IOWA SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER PERIODICALLY HOLDS OFFICE HOURS AT THE INCUBATOR, PROVIDING FURTHER GUIDANCE TO INCUBATOR CLIENTS WHILE SETTING UP SHOP THERE ON A MONTHLY BASIS. THE AMENITIES ARE BEING UTILIZED, SYNERGIES ARE BEING CREATED AND NEEDS ARE BEING ADDRESSED; NEEDS OF THE LOCAL STARTUP COMMUNITY. THE INCUBATOR ADDS LUSTER TO THE CITY OF WEST DES MOINES' REPUTATION AS A PRO-BUSINESS COMMUNITY - VIEWED AS A GREAT PLACE TO LAUNCH AND DEVELOP ENTREPRENEURIAL DREAMS. THIS ALL SPEAKS TO THE FACT THAT THE CITY IS POSITIONED PERFECTLY TO ASSIST FORWARD-THINKING BUSINESSES OF ALL SHAPES AND SIZES WHILE CONTRIBUTING TO AN ENTREPRENEURIAL ECOSYSTEM AIMED AT THOSE WHO VALUE THEIR ASSOCIATION WITH - AND WITHIN - WEST DES MOINES. THE INCUBATOR IS SET FOR A MOVE, IN JUNE 2016, TO A CITY-OWNED BUILDING IN HISTORIC VALLEY JUNCTION, WHERE IT WILL CONTINUE REINFORCING THE NET POSITIVE IMPACT ITS ORGANIZATIONS AND INTERACTIONS CAN HAVE ON THE CITY'S BUSINESS RETENTION AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT GOALS. THE NEW SPACE WILL BE UTILIZED TO HOLD ADDITIONAL WORKSHOPS, SEMINARS AND EVENTS FOR BUSINESSES LOCATED IN THE INCUBATOR, AND PARTICULARLY IN VALLEY JUNCTION, AS WELL AS THOSE LOCATED OUTSIDE OF THE ORGANIZATION AND IN THE COMMUNITY. TO DATE, A TOTAL OF 27 COMPANIES HAVE LOCATED WITHIN THE WEST DES MOINES BUSINESS INCUBATOR AND UTILIZED ITS SERVICES, INCLUDING SIX COMPANIES THAT HAVE GRADUATED: APPCORE LLC, KCL ENGINEERING, ORANGETHEORY FITNESS, GOPHERMODS, THREE RAZORS MEDIA AND SOCIAL | - | $67,093 |

“The west des moines business incubator was founded with a mission of fostering business enterprises via the creation of an entrepreneurial "ecosystem" for early-stage ventures. At the same time, there have been numerous instances of individuals showing up organically at a planned event or in”
