The purpose of the organization is to promote recreational sports, provide extramural competition and social interaction, and cultivate the habits of good sportsmanship while providing opportunities for top level competition. City 6 is composed of drexel university, lasalle university, saint joseph's university, temple university, university of pennsylvania, and villanova university. The city 6 extramural classic was founded by representatives from temple university and saint joseph's university as a way to encourage recreational sports and social interaction among the city universities. Tournaments are held at venues throughout the area, including some of the best collegiate facilities in the city such as the palestra, villanova football stadium and saint joseph's alumni hall. The extramural classic is a frequent focus at regional and national conferences and serves as a model for other programs and institutions. The philadelphia city 6 extramural classic is the nation's only association of college recreation departments offering undergraduate intramural teams from participating schools an opportunity to compete for a city championship each year. City championships are organized in four different sports. The organization has established a professional development portfolio, encompassing networking opportunities with the planning and execution of their annual symposium. Additionally, the organization has a fitness and wellness portfolio to incorporate fitness/wellness related programming, in addition to spearheading our annual philanthropic efforts.

CITY 6 IS COMPOSED OF DREXEL UNIVERSITY, LASALLE UNIVERSITY, SAINT JOSEPH'S UNIVERSITY, TEMPLE UNIVERSITY, UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA, AND VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY. THE CITY 6 EXTRAMURAL CLASSIC WAS FOUNDED BY REPRESENTATIVES FROM TEMPLE UNIVERSITY AND SAINT JOSEPH'S UNIVERSITY AS A WAY TO ENCOURAGE RECREATIONAL SPORTS AND SOCIAL INTERACTION AMONG THE CITY UNIVERSITIES. TOURNAMENTS ARE HELD AT VENUES THROUGHOUT THE AREA, INCLUDING SOME OF THE BEST COLLEGIATE FACILITIES IN THE CITY SUCH AS THE PALESTRA, VILLANOVA FOOTBALL STADIUM AND SAINT JOSEPH'S ALUMNI HALL. THE EXTRAMURAL CLASSIC IS A FREQUENT FOCUS AT REGIONAL AND NATIONAL CONFERENCES AND SERVES AS A MODEL FOR OTHER PROGRAMS AND INSTITUTIONS. THE PHILADELPHIA CITY 6 EXTRAMURAL CLASSIC IS THE NATION'S ONLY ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGE RECREATION DEPARTMENTS OFFERING UNDERGRADUATE INTRAMURAL TEAMS FROM PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS AN OPPORTUNITY TO COMPETE FOR A CITY CHAMPIONSHIP EACH YEAR. CITY CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE ORGANIZED IN FOUR DIFFERENT SPORTS. THE ORGANIZATION HAS ESTABLISHED A PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PORTFOLIO, ENCOMPASSING NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES WITH THE PLANNING AND EXECUTION OF THEIR ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM. ADDITIONALLY, THE ORGANIZATION HAS A FITNESS AND WELLNESS PORTFOLIO TO INCORPORATE FITNESS/WELLNESS RELATED PROGRAMMING, IN ADDITION TO SPEARHEADING OUR ANNUAL PHILANTHROPIC EFFORTS.
