“The purpose of the stephanie marie burgos scholarship, which was founded in 2008, is to encourage, in memory of stephanie marie burgos, the pursuit of higher education by students who possess an enthusiasm for the fine and communication arts, have experienced adversity in their lives and demonstrate financial need. Each spring, the stephanie marie burgos scholarship, inc. Will select a high school senior to receive a yearly scholarship of 500 for up to four years, a total of 2,000, for the payment of academic expenses related to his or her attendance at an institution of higher education. The selected applicant will receive the annual award as long as he or she is enrolled full-time in good standing at an accredited four-year college or university.”

“In july 2016, jennifer van was selected as the 9th scholarship recipient. She is from bronx, new york, and a graduate of bronx science high school. She started her attendance at stony brook college in the fall of 2016. Jennifer was presented mid-july during a private dinner with smbs's executive director, diana diaz-torres, and treasurer, alexandria agrinsoni, on wednesday, july 20th at jimmy's cafe in the bronx. Jennifer was accompanied by her mother, who was as equally as excited and honored to receive the scholarship as our newest scholar.”

“In 2011, the organization created a peer support/mentorship program for the scholarship recipients to help the students build a support system within themselves as well as the board members who serves as mentors. Due to this program, the students/scholars finally got to personally meet each other, although they had informally met via social media, facebook. It is the board's intention to have these scholars meet as often as possible to share their college experiences and keep them connected.”
