Infectious Diseases: Funded through Equipping Africa - Development of a web-based platform for teaching infectious diseases from actual cases (https://infectiousdiseasesafrica.com/login/index.php). Sign in as student.one with password; Student@123. Antibiotic resistance for a bacteria (Mycoplasma genitalium) that is a common cause of sexually transmitted infection throughout the world. This will be the first analysis of resistance levels in sub-Saharan Africa and will help guide treatment of patients with this infection. A graduate student is doing this as her research project and will submit a dissertation and also submit for publication. Other research and teaching accomplishments - Analysis of the impact of Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) training for medical officers at the AKU outreach clinics: This project includes the rollout and evaluation of an online AMS course designed especially for medical officers and also offered to pharmacists at the clinics. In addition, quantitative surveys of patients and qualitative assessment of knowledge and attitudes regarding AMS and AMR are being done; as of the end of 2024, the latter was submitted for publication by a pediatric resident and provided the material for her dissertation. Presentation and range of CNS infections in patients admitted to AKUHN from 2013 onward. This includes identifying all patients who had LPs done and analyzing those with possible infection. Those with infection were categorized as bacterial, viral and aseptic, cryptococcal and tuberculous meningitis. Expected publications will include the overall analysis and specific studies of viral, cryptococcal and tuberculous meningitis and is being done by a multidisciplinary team. Presentation and outcome of Klebsiella bacteremia among patients admitted to AKU. This is the second-most common Gram negative pathogen identified and the most common Gram negative hospital-acquired infection. It is also the most problematic in terms of antimicrobial resistance, including resistance to carbapenems and even polymyxins. Correlation of PCP PCR with clinical presentation PCR is highly sensitive for PCP, but there is a colonization state that makes it nonspecific. We are analyzing whether the quantitative value will distinguish infection from colonization. This is being done as a research project by a clinical pathology resident for her dissertation and for publication.$55,870$59,891
African Consortium for Quality Improvement Research (ACQUIRE) in Front line Health - The Africa Consortium for Quality Improvement Research in Frontline Health Care (ACQUIRE) is a not-for-profit organization based in Nairobi, Kenya. ACQUIRE is working towards empowering frontline healthcare workers and their institutions to apply continuous evidence-based quality improvement The ACQUIRE consortium is jointly led by Kijabe Hospital and Kenyatta National Hospital and takes a team-based, learning-by-research approach to Quality Improvement. Still in its nascent phase, ACQUIREs fiduciary operations are supported by the Africa Mission Healthcare (AMH) along with a Board of Directors that includes representatives from the co-founding health care institutions. Equipping Africa 501c3 has given startup funding to help this initiative grow. In 2024 the fourth year of operations ACQUIRE continued work on several significant engagements and continued work on a QI curriculum. ACQUIREs donor base has substantially expanded leveraging the investments made in early years. 1. ACQUIRE Theory Leadership course, in 2024 had excellent results in building capacity in healthcare workers in multiple countries, with an 81% completion rate. In 2024, 106 healthcare institutions from 10 SSA countries participated in the Theory course. 2. ACQUIRE held its first Quality Improvement Forum, Building Quality Improvement into Africas Health System Agenda. This conference with 60 in person and over 600 online attendees delivered 2 days of content to build capacity. The ability of Equipping Africa to nurture start-up endeavors like ACQUIRE demonstrates how well targeted funding can leverage impact, mobilizing other donors, and reach multiple countries on the continent.$35,000$42,274
