ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0Empowerment Through Integration, Inc. (the "Organization") is a non-profit organization exempt from taxation under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended. For reasons discussed below, the Organization did not timely file its federal information return (Form 990) for the taxable year ending December 31, 2019 (the "Return"). This statement explains the circumstances constituting reasonable cause for the Organization's late filing. The late filing of the Return stems from the upheaval the Organization experienced as a result of the covid-19 pandemic, which caused constrained funds and resources, high turnover among the Organization's staff and leadership, and reduced overall staffing due to budgetary constraints. These changes included the following: The Chief Operating Officer's contract terminated on March 31, 2020, and the Organization was unable to hire a replacement; The Finance Director stepped down at the end of summer 2020 and no replacement was found; Chief Executive Officer Sara Minkara stepped down from her role as CEO in July 2020, and Anna Barbosa, Program Director, transitioned to the role of Executive Director; and Number of employees was reduced from five full-time and two part-time members, to only three-full time member, with salaries reduced. Due to short staffing and limited funding, Organization was unable to timely prepare the Return. The Organization was aware of the requirement to file the Return and was not neglectful or careless, but rather wanted to ensure the Return was properly prepared and was not able to timely arrange help with such preparation under the circumstances. As such, the Organization was delayed in its preparation of the Return. The Organization finally was able to engage a CPA to assist with preparation of the Return in December of 2020. The Organization is committed to ensuring all future filings are timely provided. In the future, the Organization will ensure that regardless of any extenuating circumstances, it retains assistance to prepare its annual Form 990 well in advance of the filing deadline and will devote any staff and resources, no matter how limited, to such effort. Organization does not anticipate that circumstances similar to those presented by the covid-19 pandemic are likely to repeat themselves, however. Based on the foregoing, the Organization maintains that it has reasonable cause for the late filing of the Return and respectfully requests that no penalties be assessed in connection with such late filing. Under penalties of perjury, I declare that I have submitted this statement of reasonable cause on behalf of the Organization, and to the best of my knowledge, the information contained herein is true, correct, and complete.
