Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Part I, line 1

Young Eisner Scholars (referred to as "YES") levels the educational playing field for students from low-income neighborhoods, providing them with the resources and support necessary to make college and career success attainable goals. We are a Los Angeles-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with two decades of community and education development work in underserved communities, striving to hold open doors into the systems of higher education and the workforce. Our programming fills in the gaps in systemic and institutional support for these historically marginalized students by helping them access crucial and transformative opportunities around the country and the world. YES support is long-term and holistic, meeting the needs of our scholars at every level - academic, socio-emotional, mental & physical health, financial - and beginning as early as elementary school and continuing through high school, college, and career placement at prestigious businesses around the globe. Our evidence-based practices are directed influenced by our YES alums, and we prioritize directly integrating our organization with the communities we serve. We aim for each student to have the opportunity to make choices about their educational and professional pursuits that are not restricted by their socio-economic limitations.

Form 990, Part X, line 19

Deferred revenue reported on Part X, line 19 represents sponsorships, table purchases, and registrations revenue for its annual fundraising event to be held in the fiscal year ending August 31,2020 that was postponed due to the pandemic and to be used for the next event anticipated to be held in fiscal year ending August 2022.

Form 990, Part XI, line 9:

bad debt recovery 22,250.

Financial Statement Notes

Part X, Line 2:

Young Eisner Scholars is a nonprofit organization exempt from taxation under Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(3) and California Revenue and Taxation Code Section 23701(d). Accordingly, no provision for income taxes is included in the financial statements. In addition, Young Eisner Scholars has been determined by the Internal Revenue Service not to be a private foundation within the meaning of Section 509(c) of the code. Generally accepted accounting principles provide accounting and disclosure guidance about positions taken by an organization in its tax returns that might be uncertain. Management has considered its tax positions and believes that all of the positions taken by Young Eisner Scholars in its federal and state exempt organization tax returns are more likely than not to be sustained upon examination. Young Eisner Scholars returns for tax years ended August 31: 2019, 2018 and 2017, are subject to examination by federal and state taxing authorities, generally for 3 years after they were filed. As of and for the year ended August 31, 2020, Young Eisner Scholars had no material unrecognized tax benefits, tax penalties or interest. Note- the above is what was reported in the audited fianncial statements. After the audit report was released, it was noted that second sentence of second paragraph meant to state Section 509(a) and not Section 509(c).

Part XI, Line 2D - Other Adjustments:

IRS990/Desc0For bright, ambitious students from low-income neighborhoods, a college degree represents a clear path out of the crippling cycle of poverty. But this potential is stifled by their circumstances: a lack of awareness, exposure, and opportunity due to financial, educational, and social inequality. YES addresses the challenges that prevent low-income students from accessing these opportunities. For instance, while half of all people from high-income families have a bachelor's degree by age 25, just 1 in 10 from low-income families do. College persistence is as significant a challenge as access - less than 1/4 of first-generation students persist after their first year of college. At YES, over 90% of our Scholars are first generation college students, and 85% are low or super-low income (con Sch O).YES offers long-term individualized, holistic support, with a primary purpose of building a foundation of education as the key to breaking the cycle of generational poverty. Beginning in middle school and continuing through career placement, we work to level the playing field and address the multiple of challenges that historically have prevented low-income students form access to academic, social, and career opportunities. Our long-term holistic support services began as early as elementary school and continue through high school, college, and career placement. These programs include academic enrichment and counseling, rigorous and expansive summer programming, individualized college counseling, career readiness workshops, and individualized support as we meet the academic, social-emotional, and cultural needs of our scholars at every milestone along their journey. Each phrase of YES programming develops a set of core skills that we have found essential for our scholars' growth and success. At YES, we strive to level the playing field, providing our scholars with the means to access both crucial and transformative opportunities around the country and the world.YES-LA serves scholars across Greater Los Angeles County-from Watts, Inglewood, & South Bay to East Los Angeles, Boyle Heights, & downtown Los Angeles. We identify scholars from 14 Title I middle schools and currently work with 50 independent and boarding school partners. In New York City, scholars are identified from six public schools in Harlem District 5. YES-Chicago serves students from the South Side, and our Appalachian scholars are identified in rural public schools in Watauga & Ashe Counties in Western North Carolina. YES currently serves almost 700 students across the country and grows by approximately 75 students annually. 100% of YES scholars are accepted to college. More importantly, 93% graduate. YES scholars are attending medical, dental, & law school, as well as a variety of graduate programs across the country. Our graduates are excelling in careers spanning every field and are employed at companies including Apple, Morgan Stanley, Google, KPMG, The Whitney Museum, Teach for America, Goldman Sachs, Boeing, UTA, Mercedes Benz, AmeriCorps, Thompson Reuters, Hogan Lovells LLP, Autodesk, The National Park Service, Banijay Studios, Northrop Grumman, and Legendary Entertainment.

IRS990ScheduleD/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0Young Eisner Scholars is a nonprofit organization exempt from taxation under Internal Revenue Code 501(c)(3) and California Revenue and Taxation Code Section 23701(d).
