Additional Explanations

Part I, line 1

Young Eisner Scholars (referred to as "YES") levels the educational playing field for students from under-resourced neighborhoods, helping them transcend academic and socio-economic inequality and removing the financial obstacles that would otherwise limit their success. We are a Los Angeles-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and have been working with students from Title I public middle schools around Los Angeles since the late 1990s, striving to hold open doors for them into the systems of higher education and make college and career success attainable goals. YES offers long-term, individualized, holistic support services, working to increase educational access and opportunity for these high-achieving students. Our programming meets students' needs at every milestone along their journey, beginning as early as elementary school and continuing through high school, college, and career placement. Furthermore, our evidence-based practices are directly influenced by our YES alums, and we prioritize directly integrating our organization with communities we serve.

The IRS has classified the organization as one that is not a private foundation within the meaning of section 509(a) of the code because it is an organization described in section(s) 509(a)(1) and 170(b)(1)(A)(vi). ASC Section 740-10 prescribes a recognition threshold and measurement attribute for the financial statement recognition and measurement of a tax position taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. ASC Section 740-10 requires that an organization recognize in the financial statements the impact of a tax position if that position will more likely than not be sustained on audit, based on the technical merits of the position. As of and for the year ended August 31, 2019, Young Eisner Scholars had no material unrecognized tax benefits, tax penalties, or interest. Young Eisner Scholars Forms 990, Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax, for each of the tax years ending August 31, 2018, 2017, and 2016 are subject to examination by the IRS, generally for 3 years after they were filed.

IRS990/Desc0Educational inequality limits life choices, career options and income opportunity. For bright, ambitious students from under-resourced neighborhoods, a college degree represents a clear path out of the crippling cycle of poverty. But this potential is stifled by their circumstances: a lack of awareness, exposure, and opportunity due to financial, educational, and social inequality. YES offers long-term individualized, holistic support, with a primary purpose of building a foundation of education as the key to breaking the cycle of generational poverty. Beginning in middle school and continuing through career placement, we work to level the playing field and address the multiple of challenges that historically have prevented low income students form access to academic, social , and (con Sch O) career opportunities. Our long-term holistic support services began as early as elementary school and continue through high school, college, and career placement. These programs include academic enrichment and counseling, rigorous and expansive summer programming, calibrated college counseling, career readiness workshops, and individualized support as we meet the academic, social-emotional, and cultural needs of our scholars at every milestone along their journey. Each phrase of YES programming develops a set of core skills that we have found essential for our scholars' growth and success. At YES, we strive to level the playing field, providing our scholars with the means to access both crucial and transformative opportunities around the country and the world.YES LA serves scholars across Greater Los Angeles County-from Watts, Inglewood, & South Bay to East Los Angeles, Boyle Heights, & DTLA. We identify scholars from 14 Title I middle schools and currently work with 50 independent and boarding school partners. In New York City, scholars are identified from six public schools in Harlem District 5. YES Chicago serves students from the South Side and our Appalachian scholars are identified in rural public schools in Watauga & Ashe Counties in Western North Carolina. YES currently serves almost 700 students across the country and grows by approximately 75 students annually. 100% of YES scholars are accepted to college. More importantly, 93% graduate. YES scholars are attending medical, dental, & law school, as well as a variety of graduate programs across the country. Our graduates are excelling in careers spanning every field and are employed at companies including Apple, Morgan Stanley, Google, KPMG, The Whitney Museum, Teach for America, Goldman Sachs, Boeing, UTA, Mercedes Benz, AmeriCorps, Thompson Reuters, Hogan Lovells LLP, Autodesk, The National Park Service, Banijay Studios, Northrop Grumman, and Legendary Entertainment.
