IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0IN APRIL 2015, AMAR BEGAN WORKING WITH A CONSORTIUM OF PARTNERS TO IMPLEMENT THE HUMAN RIGHTS DOCUMENTATION INITIATIVE (HRDI), A PROJECT AIMING TO IMPROVE THE CAPACITY OF IRAQ'S CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS (CSOS) TO DOCUMENT HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES COMMITTED BY ALL SIDES OF THE CURRENT CONFLICT AND ACTIVATE REPOSITORIES FOR CIVIC PARTICIPATION THAT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO FUTURE TRANSITIONAL JUSTICE PROCESSES. IN FEBRUARY OF 2017, AMAR COMPETED THE FIRST PHASE OF THE HRDI, AND IDENTIFIED 11 NEW CIVIL SOCIETY REPRESENTATIVES TO JOIN THE INITIATIVE'S NEXT PHASE, FURTHER EXPANDING THE REACH AND CAPACITY OF THE DOCUMENTATION NETWORK.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0AMAR'S ESCAPING DARKNESS INITIATIVE BEGAN IN 2015, PROVIDING PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT IN FOUR GOVERNORATES SPANNING IRAQ TO VICTIMS SUFFERING FROM SUSTAINED MENTAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL TRAUMA. 36 PSYCHOLOGICAL SUPPORT UNITS (PSUS) OPERATED IN EXISTING GOVERNMENT AND AMAR-RUN MEDICAL CENTERS, CONSISTING OF ONE GENERAL PRACTITIONER (GP) AND TWO COMMUNITY-BASED SOCIAL WORKERS (CBWS). SINCE PROJECT START, GPS AND CBWS HAVE SERVED 4,818 PATIENTS AND 8,081 BENEFICIARIES, RESPECTIVELY, WITH BOTH GPS AND CBWS REACHING A TOTAL OF 677 GBV SURVIVORS. TO REDUCE STIGMA AND ENCOURAGE POSITIVE CULTURAL DISCOURSE ON MENTAL HEALTH, AMAR ENGAGED IN SCHOOLS AND THE LARGER COMMUNITY, WHILE ALSO BROADCASTING MENTAL HEALTH-FOCUSED RADIO PROGRAMS. BY THE END OF 2017, SCHOOL-BASED ACTIVITIES REACHED 4,316 CHILDREN THROUGH MONTHLY AND WEEKLY PROGRAMMING, 5,993 PEOPLE ATTENDED COMMUNITY EVENTS, AND 18,500 LISTENED TO THE PROJECT'S RADIO PROGRAMS. IN ADDITION TO COMMUNAL PSYCHOSOCIAL BENEFIT AND COMMUNITY COHESION, THESE ACTIVITIES ALSO PROVIDED PATHWAYS FOR INDIVIDUALS TO REACH OUT TO ESCAPING DARKNESS STAFF FOR PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0IN MARCH 2017, AMAR AND THE HRDI IRAQ CONSORTIUM BEGAN THE HRDI'S SECOND PHASE, ADVANCING HUMAN RIGHTS THROUGH NEEDS DRIVEN ADVOCACY (AHR-NDA). AN ADDITIONAL 35 DOCUMENTERS WERE ADDED TO THE DOCUMENTATION TEAM BY THE END OF 2017, FURTHERING THE TEAM'S ABILITY TO DOCUMENT INSTANCES OF HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS AND ARCHIVE THESE STATEMENTS IN THE SECURE NATIONAL DATABASE. DOCUMENTERS COLLECTED 1,595 STATEMENTS, USED TO ADVOCATE ON BEHALF OF VICTIMS FOR NEEDED SERVICES AND TO SEEK ACCOUNTABILITY FOR VICTIMS THROUGH IRAQI DOMESTIC INSTITUTIONS. DOCUMENTERS REFERRED 66 VICTIMS OF HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS TO NEEDED SERVICES, WITH 67% OF THOSE VICTIMS ABLE TO FULLY ACCESS SERVICES. BY THE CLOSE OF 2017, REGIONAL DOCUMENTATION TEAMS PREPARED TO LAUNCH LOCAL AND NATIONAL ADVOCACY CAMPAIGNS, ADDRESSING THE NEEDS OF VICTIMS AS DOCUMENTED THROUGH THEIR STATEMENTS COLLECTED. AMAR, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE MARSHALL LEGACY INSTITUTE, BEGAN THE NETWORK FOR THE ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN IN IRAQ (NEW IRAQ) PROJECT IN MAY 2017. NEW IRAQ AIMS TO PROMOTE ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT, HOPE, AND DIGNITY AMONG WOMEN WHO FACE INCREASED FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY DUE TO THE LOSS OR SEVERE INJURY OF A MALE PROVIDER IN THEIR FAMILY FROM THE RECENT ARMED CONFLICT, VIOLENT EXTREMISM, OR SECTARIAN VIOLENCE. BY THE END OF 2017, THE PROJECT ESTABLISHED A MENTORSHIP NETWORK BY CONNECTING 74 IRAQI FEMALE TRAINEES WITH 14 SUCCESSFUL FEMALE IRAQI AND U.S.-BASED ARABIC SPEAKING MENTORS. MENTORS PROVIDED BI-MONTHLY TRAINING AND MENTORING SESSIONS TO EQUIP THEIR TRAINEES WITH THE ENTREPRENEURIAL AND PROFESSIONAL SKILLS NEEDED TO ENTER IRAQ'S LABOR MARKET THROUGH EITHER FORMAL EMPLOYMENT OR SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT. IN LATE 2017, NEW IRAQ ALSO OFFERED A BI-MONTHLY COMPUTER COURSE TO FURTHER BUILD ON THE SKILLS GAINED THROUGH THE TRAINING AND MENTORING SESSIONS. IN DECEMBER 2017, AMAR SUCCESSFULLY IDENTIFIED TWO PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN SOUTHERN IRAQ IN WHICH TO INSTALL REVERSE OSMOSIS UNITS, PROVIDING A SUSTAINABLE CLEAN WATER SOLUTION TO OVER 3,350 YOUNG BOYS AND GIRLS. PRIOR TO RO UNIT INSTALLATION, THE WATER QUALITY IN BOTH SCHOOLS REMAINED AT HARMFUL LEVELS TO ITS YOUNG STUDENTS - THE LEVEL OF TOTAL DISSOLVED SOLIDS IN MIDEAN SCHOOL WAS REPORTED AS 625 MILLIGRAMS PER LITER, WHILE THE TOTAL DISSOLVED SOLIDS LEVEL AT AL-QUDS SCHOOL WAS A STAGGERING 3,774 MILLIGRAMS PER LITER. ONCE INSTALLED, EACH RO UNIT IS ABLE TO PRODUCE UP TO 2,500 LITERS OF CLEAN WATER PER DAY, AND IT IS EXPECTED THAT THE RO UNITS INSTALLED IN THE SCHOOLS WILL PRODUCE APPROXIMATELY 1.2 MILLION LITERS OF CLEAN WATER IN THE SPAN OF A SCHOOL YEAR. AS PART OF THE INITIATIVE, AMAR ALSO PLANNED TO TRAIN TWO TEACHERS AT EACH SCHOOL TO DELIVER A TWO-MONTH WATER AND SANITATION HEALTH (WASH) COURSE CENTERING ON HEALTHY WATER USAGE, SANITATION, AND WATER-BORNE DISEASE PREVENTION TO STUDENTS. PUBLIC HEALTH EDUCATION IS OFTEN IGNORED IN FORMAL EDUCATION SYSTEMS - AS SUCH, THE WASH COURSE FILLED A VITAL GAP IN KNOWLEDGE FOR MANY OF THE STUDENTS. IN SEPTEMBER 2017, AMAR LAID THE GROUND WORK TO ESTABLISH AMAR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT (ACE) CENTERS IN THE BASRA, AL-MUTHANNA, AND BAGHDAD GOVERNORATES. SIX GENDER-SPECIFIC CENTERS, WITH TWO IN EACH GOVERNORATE, WOULD EMPOWER 6,000 VULNERABLE YOUTH, AGED 18-30, WITH JOBS SKILL TRAINING COURSES. WITH A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO THE COMMUNITY CENTER, PARTICIPANTS WOULD BECOME ACTIVE AND ENGAGED MEMBERS OF SOCIETY THROUGH THE CULTIVATION OF ECONOMIC ACTIVITY, THE PROTECTION AGAINST GBV AND TRAUMA, AND THE PROMOTION OF POSITIVE CULTURAL DISCOURSE. BY THE END OF 2017, AMAR SECURED APPROVALS FROM THE MINISTRY OF LABOR AND SOCIAL AFFAIRS (MOLSA) AND THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION (MOE) TO IMPLEMENT SKILLS CLASSES IN THE CENTERS.
