Mission and Program Overview

Mission

ClimbHI seeks to inspire students to finish high school and proceed to post-secondary education or employment by educating them about future career paths and the process necessary to achieve those goals. Established in 2008, ClimbHI, provides people education through the exploration of life's opportunities. We foster learning by partnering and working with businesses, educational institutions, and other governmental, private, profit, and non-profit organizations, entities and individuals that promote and further the purposes of the corporation. The goal is to take ClimbHI's sustainable model nationwide, but the initial focus is on Hawaii with programs including participants from all islands, including Ni'ihau. The programs are conducted by volunteers from the industry, local college/university students, and ClimbHI. Also, leadership for the program comes from the speakers, industry participants, other businesses, volunteers, and the returning high school and college students.

ClimbHI seeks to inspire students to finish high school and proceed to post-secondary educations or employment by educating them about future career paths and the process necessary to achieve those goals.

IRS990/Desc0LEI program is a Hawaii Tourism Authority sponsored workforce development project to inspire Hawai'i's youth to select careers in the Hawai'i visitor industry by providing them with the necessary means to achieve success. From the student's perspective, LEI program represents an opportunity for Leadership, Exploration and Inspiration, and from the hospitality industry's perspective, LEI provides an opportunity to Lead, Expose, and Inspire Hawaii's youth. The 8th annual LEI program attracted 1,000 high school students from 42 high schools across the State of Hawaii. 33 hotels opened their doors to provide an overview of their hotel operations. LEI programs were hosted on four islands, with special considerations for the unique logistics on each island. For Oahu, Maui, and Kauai, the programs consisted of day-long events at central locations on the islands. For Hawai'i Island, an overnight program accommodated the driving distances allowing students from high schools across the island to attend and experience the Mauna Kea Resort. In 2019, the intern and Alaka'i (college students) programs attracted 7 interns across the state college programs and 150 college students volunteered their time across the islands and they completed a 2-hour leadership training ahead of the event. The planning and execution of the career fairs have been developed into college curriculums and incorporated into coursework for several colleges across the State. The career fairs on each island successfully brought together 119 businesses in 2019.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0ClimbHI developed a Hospitality Pathway Certificate for high school students throughout the state under a contract with the Hawaii State Department of Education (DOE) and with support from the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA). The Service Excellence Certificate of Achievement curriculum provides fundamental skills for employment in the hospitality industry and beyond launched in January 2020. The curriculum was exclusively developed in partnership with the School of Hotel Administration at the Cornell SJ Johnson College of Business, one of the leading hospitality administration programs in the world, for the DOE's Career and Technical Education (CTE) program. Upon completion of the program's 10 lessons, students will receive a Service Excellence Certificate of Achievement from Cornell University and ClimbHI. The program will be available for DOE CTE students starting in the second half of the 2019-2020 academic year.
