Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Public Health & Safety: (a) Chillum Road Safety - This road serves as our primary, northern border thoroughfare. It carries thousands of vehicular traffic day and night, too many of which exceed the posted speed. There have been some pedestrian mishaps since there are too few official crossings. We managed to get the State Highway Administration to formally reduce the posted speed limit from 35 mph to 30 mph one of several approaches to reduce mishaps. (b) Queens Chapel Road - Our board managed to get the State Highway Administration to install a new bus stop shelter to better protect shopping center patrons, and other pedestrians, from the constant, heavy flow of traffic along this major north/south road. (c) Improved communications - We assumed temporary responsibility for hosting quarterly virtual meetings with the State Highway Administration. Participants included our Board, community leaders, and SHA staff. These regular sessions produced a few, much needed improvements. (d) Feral Cat Managemenbt - We partnered with a trap/neuter/return (TNR) entity, to collect a total of 25 feral cats and kittens from two locations within our neighborhood. This project was very much needed since our human residents were at risk for a significant increase in unchecked number of additional, homeless creatures, along with the diseases they can and do acquire, such as rabies.-$6,975
Future Development Planning: Two of our Board members participated extensively in developing the County's West Hyattsville/Queens Chapel Sector Plan. This document will guide how this and other nearby neighborhoods will be zoned, developed, and redeveloped during the next 25 years.-$930
Resident Information: Since it was impossibl to organize indoor neighborhood gatherings, due to the Pandemic health situation, other communication techniques became quite important. We published and distributed a high quality, comprehensive Newsletter to all single family homes within our boundaries. Furthermore, we organized and manned a display & literature table at an all-day, outdoor Community Day event. This well organized event was sponsored by Cadia Healthcare, a long-term health facility which lies within our boundaries. This in-person, healthy approach to communication was quite helpful and facilitated interactions between our residents, police personnel, area workers, and political policy makers.-$930
County Council Recognition: Members of the Council passed and distributed a formal congratulatory Resolution. The wording saluted the effectiveness of this corporation and its "valuable community efforts".-$465
