To promote and protect the interest of the membership, to encourage the apprenticeship system and higher standard of skill, to reduce the hours of labor, to secure adequate pay for our work, to elevate the standard of our crafts, to cultivate a feeling of friendship amount the members of the brotherhood, to assist our members in procuring employment and to protect our members by legal and proper means against any injustice that may be done to them, and to improve the moral, social and intellectual conditions of our memberships and all working people.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 1A

The executive committee has the authority to act on behalf of the governing body by attending the local union executive board meetings with voice but have no voting power.. The committee consists of president, vice president, recording secretary, financial secretary, treasurer, conductor, warden and three trustees.

The union's membership consists of individuals employed in the trades which meet the criteria set forth in the constitution.

Members in good standing for 12 consecutive months may vote for the officers and delegates of the governing body.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7B

Any amendments and changes to the bylaws, outside of the twenty-one mandatory provisions, must in no way conflict with constitution and laws of the united brotherhood and must be approved by a majority of the membership voting by secret ballot at a special or regular meeting upon reasonable written notice provided at least 30 days prior to such vote. Furthermore, any proposed amendment must be approved by the general vice president prior to becoming law.

An officer or committee members shall disclose all facts material to the conflict of interest. A person that has a conflict of interest shall not participate in or permitted to hear the executive board's discussion o fht ematter except to disclose material facts and to respond to such questions. The person having the conflict of interest may not vote on the agreement or transaction and shall not be present in the meeting room when the vote is taken. Each responsible person shall annually complete a disclosure form identifying any relationships, positions or circumtances in which the responsible person is involved or believes could contribute to a conflict of interest arising. The policy should be reviewed annually by each member of the executive board.

The union maintains its accounting records on the modified cash basis which varies from accounting principles generally accepted in the united states in the following significant respects: 1) income such as dues, interest, etc., is not recognized until cash has been collected. 2) costs and expenses for items such as salaries, per capita taxes, fringe benefits, etc. Are not recorded until cash has been disbursed. 3) assets (other than cash) and liabilities are not recorded except with respect to the recognition of property and equipment and liabilities related to amounts that are due to a related party which is collected on behalf of that related party and amounts held for the benefit of others.
