We accomplish this through our Meals Program, Catering Program, and teaching Cooking Classes. TKPs main program is our Meals Program. In our Meals Program volunteer teens join professional chefs in commercial kitchens to prepare nutritious, medically tailored meals that are delivered to individuals and families who are impacted by life threatening illness. TKP Meals Program meets the needs of critically and chronically ill people in Santa Cruz County who are low income, lack a support network of family or friends, or do not qualify for other free meal delivery service. The program also meets the needs of teens by providing them with valuable life skills and the opportunity to give back to their community. Due to the pandemic, we closed to volunteers in March of 2020. In June of 2020 we brought youth chefs back as paid staff to ensure our meal production goals could be met.Highlights of our Meals Program in 2020 include: Increasing our meals output by 73% and serving 84% more families. In 2020 TKP delivered 69,574 medically tailored meals to families in Santa Cruz County who are struggling with a critical illness. The increased meals were in response to the needs presented by the pandemic as many clients lost a paid caregiver who would normally help to prepare meals. Engaging 120 teen and adult volunteers in cooking and delivery of meals. Teen and adult volunteer delivery drivers served 11,105 hours in the kitchen and on deliveries. Partnering with Central Coast Alliance for Health (CCAH) to deliver medically tailored meals to clients to members experiencing diabetes, congestive heart failure, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Clients referred through CCAH receive 14 medically tailored meals per week for up to 12 weeks as a member benefit. In FY 19-20 saw an increase in the overall budget by 630% due to a capital grant TKP received to build out a kitchen. This funding- $325,000, was returned to the granting organization after the project was tabled due to the pandemic in FY 20-21. As TKP responded to the needs of the community during the pandemic, contracts with government agencies provided a source of income to buoy the losses we faced with our lack of earned income through catering and classes. |
