| BRAZILIAN HERITAGE LANGUAGE PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN 2 to 17 years old: ABRACE offers Portuguese as a heritage language classes to children and grandchildren of Brazilian immigrants. Last year we had an average of 130 students who attended classes on Saturday mornings throughout two semesters. We successfully held in-person classes and other educational activities for children and their families while keeping the virtual format available to families who either resided in distant locations or preferred to maintain the social-distanced learning environment for their children. After a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic restrictions we were able to resume our Babies Group monthly class inviting families to enjoy an hour of activities with their babies free of charge. Our families teachers friends and partners came together and demonstrated tremendous support by participating in the activities volunteering in events and promoting our program. The Youth Volunteer Program ProJov created in January of 2018 remained strong and was essential in supporting the educational activities throughout the year. The program enables teenagers ages 14- to 17-year-old speakers of Portuguese as a heritage language to combine their interests and talents and engage in making the learning experience fun and meaningful for the community. We were able to meet the interest and demand of 20 adolescents during the Fall months and increase this number to welcome 23 teenagers the following semester. These valuable members of our community contributed with a variety of activities such as organizing and maintaining our library supporting teachers with learning activities in the classrooms developing and promoting a reading incentive program Ler é Bom Demais volunteering during social events interacting with parents and visitors participating in group discussions among others endeavors that expand the concept of community service. Initially this program was coordinated by a volunteer but since 2022 this is a paid position given the importance of the planning and leadership needed to guide the teens towards a development path that helps them learn and practice autonomy responsibility and decision-making. The program has gained recognition and increased interest not only from local families and teens but from other institutions and educators across the United States. In August of 2023 ProJov was awarded the Portuguese Language Project of the Year by the American Organization of Teachers of Portuguese - AOTP. The mobile library received book donations that enriched our collection even more. With more than 1,500 books in Portuguese the library remains a valuable resource for the community beyond the families of ABRACEs students. Every other Saturday we brought the library to the school and offered access to a variety of children and young adult literature while providing fun and educational activities such as storytelling group discussions and book presentations. The library system Librarika tracks a circulation of a1,000 items every 3 months which demonstrates that many families take advantage of these opportunities to enrich their children's literacy skills and language learning outside the classes and group environment. | $0 | $83,073 |
| ACTIVITIES FOR ADULTS: ABRACE offers Brazilian Portuguese language classes for non-Portuguese speakers on a regular basis and various workshop classes and lectures throughout the year for families who live in a multicultural environment. Our goal is to provide resources for social cultural integration for Brazilian-American families in the Washington Metropolitan area and beyond given the new horizons that virtual learning opened during the pandemic. Throughout the year we also offer frequent professional development opportunities for teachers in which important educational and pedagogical topics are presented and discussed. Teachers explore Portuguese as a Heritage Language concepts strategies and resources to be able to provide the students with modern learning approaches and better support families in their efforts to nurture the connection to Brazilian language and culture. This year with a grant from the Brazilian State Department we implemented a project consisting of four teaching professional development workshops in which 2 sessions were administered before September of 2023 and the other two in October and November. The topics were chosen to reflect current issues in the field of education such as diversity equality inclusion and justice and family engagement. The workshops offered free of charge for our team and for professionals from other states and countries had approximately 50 participants from all over the world. We will continue to offer opportunities for adults in our community. These initiatives aim to support them in exploring the field of language development and strengthening their multicultural identity. We dedicate a separate room in the facilities we rent for holding workshops and presentations on topics of interest of the community and many of our meetings are open to the general public Since the Spring of 2022 ABRACE's students and families have enjoyed the benefits of the new location Langley High School which offers renovated classrooms ample parking a lobby that facilitates social integration of families and a courtyard that allows for recreational activities. | $0 | $9,075 |
| OTHER CULTURAL PROGRAMS: After years following strict health and safety measures due to the pandemic we were finally able to hold our traditional Cultural Fair in June of 2023. The event celebrated its 10th anniversary with the special theme Festa Junina folklore festivity. With a showcase of the students' work and accomplishments workshops for kids and adults live music performances demonstrations of Capoeira dance and taste of authentic Brazilian cuisine we were able to gather more than 600 participants and promote this opportunity for social integration and community building. Other social events offered during this year included the Literacy Picnic and the Dia do Saci parade celebrating a Brazilian popular folklore character while integrating with an American cultural festivity Halloween. | $0 | $8,015 |
| CULTURAL-EDUCATIONAL: We offered special literature- and literacy-building activities for children and youth with the goal of expanding their language and knowledge in the arts. The youth volunteers led a reading incentive program called Ler é Bom Demais in which children are encouraged to log their daily reading in Portuguese in exchange for small incentives prizes. During the year the adolescents were able to collect more than 300 reading logs with more than 3000 books listed. ABRACE sponsored this reading program by donating towards the purchase of prizes and school supplies for the library. In partnership with EducArte an arts non-profit organization we offered music education classes to all our students during this year. Throughout the year our children explored basic music concepts and instruments while learning and enjoying popular Brazilian children's songs. At the end of each semester each class presented their song to an audience of parents and teachers. | $0 | $0 |
