Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 7A

Members of the Board of Directors (BoD) are elected by members of the Blue Marble Leadership Council (BMLC) according to the provisions established in the BMS bylaws (Articles III and V). BoD members are elected for three-year terms, and the BMLC is responsible for electing or re-electing directors with expiring terms at the end of each fiscal year. BoD candidates may include current BoD members, members of the BMLC, and members of the Board of Advisors (BoA).

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

Form 990 was completed by two officers of BMS, Sanjoy Som (President/Chief Executive Officer, SS) and Jacob Haqq-Misra (Chief Operating Officer, JH). JH used the Form 990 Online website (https://efile.form990.org/) to create a return for the current tax year, which allows previous year's data to be recalled when creating a new return. JH set up the new return for tax year 2013 and entered preliminary information. SS then entered the required budget information and checked to make sure form 990 accurately reflects the BMS accounting records kept using Intuit Quickbooks. JH and SS then met in a virtual conference room to discuss completion of Schedule O, which includes descriptions of the major program activities of BMS. JH and SS completed these sections using a shared Google document, which JH then entered into the online form 990. JH and SS both made one final check through the form for accuracy, and the completed form was sent to the Board of Directors for review. After addressing any concerns raised by board members, JH then signed and submitted the form.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

Documents relating to BMS are all made publicly available on the BMS website (http://bluemarblespace.org/about/). These include articles of incorporation for the state of Washington, a letter of exemption from the IRS, documentation of organizational structure, and documentation of bylaws (which includes a conflict of interest policy). Any other documents will be provided upon request; requests can be made by contacting BMS via mail or email (http://bluemarblespace.org/contact-us/).

Form 990, Part III, Line 2

GreenSpace (http://www.growgreenspace.org/) is a new initiative of Blue Marble Space that began on October 9, 2014. GreenSpace is a permaculture center that provides Pennsylvania and Delaware with nutritious and ethically grown produce. Guided by the latest research in sustainable farming, Greenspace is committed to the health of our planet, our families, and our customers. GreenSpace fits into the organization's broader goals by helping us realize specific aspects of the Blue Mable Space vision; specifically, through GreenSpace, we can work toward "improving the human condition on Earth", "facilitating the synergy of technology with the environment", and "advancing and preserving international awareness of our planet, its resources and its people". We reflect these goals in the GreenSpace Code of Ethics (http://growgreenspace.org/ethics/). As an initiative of Blue Marble Space, GreenSpace provides the "hands on the ground" that connects the aspirations of our research and education efforts with real-world problem solving of improving sustainable development on Earth. We also use the GreenSpace facility to engage in research relevant to the broader issues of space exploration. Any proceeds we generate beyond our operating expenses are re-invested in the research and education initiatives of Blue Marble Space. As we grow our production, we hope to not only support the Pennsylvania community with local produce, but we will also directly provide support to educational initiatives and basic scientific research.

IRS990/Desc0Blue Marble Space Institute of Science (BMSIS) is a non-profit research institute with an interdisciplinary approach to studying the relationship between Earth system science, space exploration, and the future of humanity (http://www.bmsis.org). BMSIS is pioneering a new Young Scientist Program (YSP). Alongside cutting-edge scientific investigations, students are also exposed to training in Communication as well as Ethics. BMSIS Young Scientists may work on-site or remotely, depending on the needs of the project, mentor, and Young Scientist. Funding is available for some projects but not all. Young Scientist positions last nominally a maximum of three months, although funded positions may last longer. BMSIS runs its own Young Scientist Program (the "BMSIS Young Scientist Program") that solicits applicants from around the world to work with a BMSIS mentor using remote collaboration tools. BMSIS also manages a collective of Young Scientists at NASA Ames Research Center (the "NASA/BMSIS Young Scientist Program in Space Biosciences") that all work with NASA Ames research mentors but complete their Communication and Ethics requirements with BMSIS mentors. During the summer of 2015, we hosted 4 participants in the BMSIS YSP and 12 participants in the NASA/BMSIS YSP. This past year was our second essay contest at BMSIS. This year's topic was "How can human civilization develop a successful strategy for the sustained exploration of the inner solar system for the next 200 years?" The purpose of the essay contest is to stimulate creative thinking relating to space exploration and global issues by exploring how changes in the Earth system will affect humanity's future. We had many outstanding entries and selected the winner through judging by BMSIS scientists. The winner and two honorable mentions received cash prizes and certificates for their accomplishment, and assistance is being provided to the contest winner to seek publication for the winning essay. BMSIS scientists regularly disseminate their research by writing non-technical summaries of their research and conducting informal recorded interviews. This written material is then distributed on the BMSIS website and the Sciworthy online news outlet (http://www.sciworthy.com), while the recorded interviews are distributed on the BMSIS website and on iTunes as a podcast. (http://www.bmsis.org/publications) BMSIS renamed its monthly science seminar to "BlueSciCon", short for Blue Marble Science Conversations. The seminar features a 30 minute discussion of a scientific, historical, or philosophical topic by a member or friend of BMSIS, followed by a question and answer session. The seminars are attended by members and friends of BMSIS, and the recorded conversation is published on the BMSIS website as well as on iTunes as a podcast. (http://www.bmsis.org/podcast)

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0In 2015 , membership in the SAGANet community increased by 300 individuals (125% of 2015 membership). We now have ~12,000 "likes" on FB and a very active Twitter feed with half a dozen active contributors and ~1,000 "followers". In 2015, the network was also reinvigorated by the appointment of new early-career Directorship for the social networking aspects of the site, with three prominent early-career astrobiologists taking the helm. Since this transition, this new team has re-invigorated the SAGANet newsletter, making it a leading source for astrobiology-related news. Our "Talk to an Astrobiologist" series also gained momentum with a monthly event featuring world-renowned astrobiologists, which is regularly well attended, with hundreds of views on the SAGANet YouTube channel. We launched the "Mentor of the Month" seminar series, which featured three early-career astrobiologists in 2015. Our Mentoring programs continue to grow, with 45 mentors currently part of the "SAGANet STEM Mentoring Labs" which were formally launched under our new name in Spring 2015. We have brought in several new programs, including a partnership with the Mars Student Imaging Program (MSIP) at ASU and groups in both South America and New Zealand. Finally, we were awarded at $10,000 grant from the Earth-Life Science Institute in Tokyo Japan for developing our online programming and website, and a $5,000 grant from the NASA Astrobiology Institute to support Ann Rolfe, an internationally renowned mentoring expert, to give a series seminars on mentoring for our STEM Mentors.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0GreenSpace (http://www.growgreenspace.org/) is a new initiative of Blue Marble Space that began on October 9, 2014. We obtained a Pennsylvania nursery license to register as a nursery/greenhouse in January 2015, and we began vending our microgreens weekly at farmers' markets in central Pennsylvania. We presented an outline of our near-term research goals at the 2015 Astrobiology Science Conference in Chicago, which examines the role of changing sky color on plant growth. We also hosted a meeting of the Southern Allegheny Chefs Association (a chapter of the American Culinary Federation) to allow chefs, food purchasers, and others in the culinary industry to tour our facility, learn about our growing methods, and sample our varieties of microgreens. GreenSpace currently provides local produce to restaurants around Altoona, Pennsylvania and participates in the Juniata Farmers' Market every Friday.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0GreenSpace (http://www.growgreenspace.org/) is a new initiative of Blue Marble Space that began on October 9, 2014.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1Members of the Board of Directors (BoD) are elected by members of the Blue Marble Leadership Council (BMLC) according to the provisions established in the BMS bylaws (Articles III and V). BoD members are elected for three-year terms, and the BMLC is responsible for electing or re-electing directors with expiring terms at the end of each fiscal year. BoD candidates may include current BoD members, members of the BMLC, and members of the Board of Advisors (BoA).
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2Form 990 was completed by two officers of BMS, Sanjoy Som (President/Chief Executive Officer, SS) and Jacob Haqq-Misra (Chief Operating Officer, JH).
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3Documents relating to BMS are all made publicly available on the BMS website (http://bluemarblespace.org/about/).
