THE $3,500 PER STUDENT COVERS BOTH SCHOOL/PLAYGROUND CONTSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND PROGRAMMING AS WELL AS ALL TRIP EXPENSES. SCHOOL THE WORLD STAFF CONDUCTS FOUR MANDATORY PRE-TRIP SEMINARS WITH THE STUDENTS TO LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORY, CULTURE, ECONOMY, AND GEOGRAPHY OF GUATEMALA. THE PROGRAM ALSO INCLUDES EXCURSIONS FOR THE STUDENTS TO EXPERIENCE GUATEMALAN CULTURE AND HISTORIC SITES. IN 2016, 120 STUDENTS FROM CONNECTICUT, MASSACHUSETTS, MARYLAND, NEW JERSEY, NEW HAMPSHIRE, CHICAGO AND WASHINGTON, D.C PARTICIPATED IN THIS PROGRAM. TO DATE, 430 STUDENTS HAVE PARTICIPATED IN SCHOOL THE WORLDS SERVICE LEARNING PROGRAM.

THE MUNICIPALITY MUST PROVIDE 50% OF THE CONSTRUCTION COSTS OR THE MATERIALS THEMSELVES AND SUPPORT SUPERVISION OF THE CONSTRUCTION. THE COMMUNITIES MUST PROVIDE THE LAND AND ALL OF THE UNSKILLED LABOR.IN 2016, WE CONTINUED TO WORK IN THESE MUNICIPALITIES IN GUATEMALA: CHINIQUE, CHICHE, CHICHICASTENANGO, SANTA CRUZ DEL QUICHE, AND SAN PEDRO DE JOCAPILAS. IN 2016 WE PURCHASED 2,723 BOOKS TO BEGIN 31 NEW LIBRARIES AND EXPAND 251 LIBRARIES CREATED IN EARLIER YEARS OF OUR PROGRAM. THE TOTAL OF NEW BOOKS DELIVERED FOR 2016 WAS 2,138.
