DescriptionGrantsExpenses
The Honolulu Sertoma Club (the Sertoma name is a composite of SERvice TO MAnkind) was established to continue the Serteen (SERvice TEEN) program and support the hearing health mission of SERTOMA, INC., the national sponsoring charity from whom we get our Group Exemption with the IRS. The core members of Honolulu Sertoma are Serteens alumni and supporters of the Serteen program. The George B. Carter Serteens Club of Hawaii consists of gifted and talented students from public and private middle and high schools on Oahu who test in the top 2% on a nationally recognized achievement test or meet the State of Hawaii Dept. of Education's criteria for gifted and talented education programs. The George B. Carter Serteens Club of Hawaii provides social interaction and leadership training for gifted and talented students who wish to serve the community. The Honolulu Sertoma Club does business as the Serteens Club of Hawaii to mentor Hawaii's gifted and talented youth by providing leadership training, peer association and community service opportunities. The Honolulu Sertoma Club offers life-long community service opportunities to its student and adult members. Every year, the Serteens youth group develops and executes several community service projects that supplement the Honolulu Sertoma Club's community service projects and grants to charities. In the past academic calendar year, the Serteens held monthly leadership development meetings and executed numerous service projects to benefit the community. In addition to community service projects, the Honolulu Sertoma Club hosts two educational enrichment camps for the Serteens. The first is in July, which is our Leadership Camp, and the second is in February, which is our Knights Motivational Camp (KMC). Both camps are for members and prospective members of the George B. Carter Serteens Club of Hawaii. The camps focus on supporting the Serteen program of positive peer association and providing opportunities for youths in grades 7-12 to expand their leadership skills and knowledge. The camps focused on supporting the Serteen mission of leadership training by holding several educational seminars on problem solving and developing action plans for projects to help the members set goals and develop the skillsets to achieve them. Serteens also developed their communications skills by publishing a monthly club newsletter about upcoming events and projects. The Serteen officers and committee members effectively use social media, internet, SMS and other digital communication channels to share gather information. The Serteen officers and committee members are coached to effectively use communication channels that will help them in their educational and professional lives. Analytical skills, planning, budget resource allocation and effective decision-making are included in the leadership training given by their Sertoma mentors to convert ideas into actionable projects. Honolulu Sertoma and its youth members in Serteens execute projects that benefit the community. For each educational camp, the officers and committee members are involved in planning multiple projects and activities in support of the Serteens mission of leadership development, positive peer association and community service. Activity Worksheets are tools utilized to plan each project. The Honolulu Sertoma members who serve as club Advisors teach the Serteens problem solving skills to cope with foreseeable and unforeseen problems. Service learning through planning and executing community service projects further reinforces Serteen leadership development. The Honolulu Sertoma Club Advisors to the Serteens Club emphasize the concept of a "Plan Book". This serves to help members define and refine their goals and allows the Sertomans and others to provide support. Many Serteen alumni continue to contribute to their communities in various ways. The Honolulu Sertoma Club awarded several scholarships to graduating high school seniors going to college. In February, the Honolulu Sertoma Club held its annual Knights Motivational Camp (KMC). Honolulu Sertomans provided program support, seminars and mentoring for the Serteens. Several practical and educational seminars were presented by Honolulu Sertoma Club members to its youth members. Sertomans also made themselves available for individual discussions and mentoring. Seminars included financial decision-making; developing personal mission statements, personal values, and goals; public speaking; long term goal setting; and critical problem sovling. The camp normally includes two planned hikes. In April, the Honolulu Sertoma Club sponsored its annual Appreciation Banquet for the Serteens youth group. This awards banquet highlighted the numerous community service projects and leadership development activities that the Serteens participated in and recognized the graduating high school seniors. Outgoing student leaders were recognized for their contributions and the newly elected student leaders were inducted in their terms of office. Scholarships were awarded under the George B. Carter Memorial Scholarship program. The newly elected Serteen officers attended leadership training seminars and workshops sponsored by Honolulu Sertoma members in May. They developed and planned upcoming community service projects, special event fundraisers and social projects for the following academic year. The Honolulu Sertoma Club produced and printed Safe Ears hearing safety brochures and distributed these brochures with an educational plan to local schools for young people to protect their hearing health. This community service project was in support of Sertoma's hearing health mission. Honolulu Sertoma offers an online hearing health and safety educational program via its website to the general public. All Honolulu Sertoma members provide charitable contributions to support Sertoma's hearing health mission. Each year, several Honolulu Sertoma members attend conventions held by various Sertoma leadership groups to raise funds in support of the Sertoma Annual Fund that finances scholarships and grants for college students entering audiology and speech therapy professions, and scholarships for students who have hearing disabilities. Honolulu Sertoma members individually contribute to Sertoma, Inc's national charity mission, and the club also contributed to Sertoma's Annual Fund.$10,658$57,616

IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt0The Honolulu Sertoma Club (the Sertoma name is a composite of SERvice TO MAnkind) was established to continue the Serteen (SERvice TEEN) program and support the hearing health mission of SERTOMA, INC., the national sponsoring charity from whom we get our Group Exemption with the IRS. The Honolulu Sertoma Club awarded several scholarships to graduating high school seniors going to
