Our board treasurer Esmenia Sinenci is the wife of then Hale Program Manager Francis Sinenci. They are both founders of our organization. Our new Finance Manager is my sister-in-law. We have a nepotism policy as well as our conflict of interest policy to help us ethically navigate these situations. In small communities like ours, with extensive familial ties, these kinds of relationships are not uncommon. However, we ensure that individuals are hired because of their qualifications and that they are the best fit amongst the pool of candidates. The hiring of family members includes a process that excludes related individuals from hiring, pay, and management decisions and they are not allowed to directly supervise family members.

After considering the salaries of Executive Directors in comparable positions for other local nonprofits, as well as the budget, projected growth and leadership needs of our organization, the Board sets a salary range for our Executive Director. After further consideration of such details as job duties, education, experience, skills and overall capacity, the Board sets the final Executive Director salary for the fiscal year.

Our new Finance Manager is my sister-in-law. We have a nepotism policy as well as our conflict of interest policy to help us ethically navigate these situations. In small communities like ours, with extensive familial ties, these kinds of relationships are not uncommon. However, we ensure that individuals are hired because of their qualifications and that they are the best fit amongst the pool of candidates. The hiring of family members includes a process that excludes related individuals from hiring, pay, and management decisions and they are not allowed to directly supervise family members.
