Mental health kokua ('mhk"), a tax exempt sec 501(c)(3) organization, acts as managing agent and social service provider for several housing urban developement projects, including the reporting organization. The organization reimburses mhk for expenses incurred on its behalf, and certain mhk board members also serve on the reporting organization's board. See also, schedule r.

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization is exempt from income taxation under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code, as well as hawaii state income taxes. As an exempt organization, however, the organization is subject to a tax on unrelated business income. As required by the uncertain tax position guidance in the financial accounting standards board's (the fasb) accounting standards codification topic 740, income taxes, the organization recognizes the financial statement benefit of a tax position only after determining that the relevant tax authority would more likely than not sustain the position after an audit. The organization has evaluated its tax positions and believes that there are no uncertain tax positions that require adjustments to the financial statements. With few exceptions, the organization is no longer subject to u.s. Federal and state examinations by tax authorities for the years ended september 30, 2018 and prior.

AS REQUIRED BY THE UNCERTAIN TAX POSITION GUIDANCE IN THE FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING STANDARDS BOARD'S (THE FASB) ACCOUNTING STANDARDS CODIFICATION TOPIC 740, INCOME TAXES, THE ORGANIZATION RECOGNIZES THE FINANCIAL STATEMENT BENEFIT OF A TAX POSITION ONLY AFTER DETERMINING THAT THE RELEVANT TAX AUTHORITY WOULD MORE LIKELY THAN NOT SUSTAIN THE POSITION AFTER AN AUDIT. THE ORGANIZATION HAS EVALUATED ITS TAX POSITIONS AND BELIEVES THAT THERE ARE NO UNCERTAIN TAX POSITIONS THAT REQUIRE ADJUSTMENTS TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS.
