| In the course of the year, we handed cash to countless homeless persons; purchased bags of food for families and the working poor; supported the efforts of local organizations that feed the homeless by providing grocery store certificates to stock their portable kitchens; assisted a volunteer program that feeds the homeless in a park by providing Vons, Kohls and Target store certificates to purchase new clothes for the homeless; provided kitchen and home items for a battered womens shelter; work clothes for women and men; purchased books for veterans at the Veterans Hospital; provided micro-business grants to assist individuals in achieving and maintaining financial self-sufficiency; provided scholarships to underprivileged college students. Each month we helped to stabilize 2 families (an abused single mother working as a domestic, with a child in college; an under-employed manual laborer with 3 children ) and 1 individual (divorced woman returning to school) with food, eyeglasses, household items, small appliances, necessities to establish a new home, gas for their cars, clothes for work interviews, etc.As in prior years, we continued to provide sufficient cash for homeless persons to stay overnight in local motels (especially during the winter), grocery cards to purchase necessities, and fastfood restaurant gift certs to purchase prepared foods. As in prior years, we continued to provide 2 young Hispanic women with scholarships to help with secondary and post-graduate college expenses, in addition to supporting the scholarship programs of the two local chapters of the ABWA.As in prior years, we continued to provide adventure novels for military veterans at the local Veterans HospitalWe continued to provide micro-business assistance to start-ups, consequently, we provided small business grants to 2 women: 1 returning to the workplace after a divorce, and 1 expanding a consulting business. We continued to provide interfaith cash contributions to include the music program of a Costa Mesa Methodist church; homeless breakfast-in-the-park program of a Bible church in Long Beach; the music program of a Presbyterian Church in Long Beach; the interfaith outreach program of the Islamic Center in Fountain Valley; theCatholic Covenant House in Los Angeles, which helps teen prostitutes get off of the streets; a Jewish program at the California Institute for Women (the womens prison in Chino); and a few Chabad outreach programs. We added the following: programs serving elderly Asian-Americans through the Asian American Senior Center; the perpetuation of the ancient art of Chinese brush painting through the Association of American Chinese Brush Painters; Collette's Children's Home (a Christian shelter); the indigent family program of the Jewish Community Center; military veterans in need of housing through the Bexley Veterans' House; Project Self-Sufficiency in Huntington Beach; the Childhood Leukemia Foundation; and several humane animal programs, among others. | $50,712 | - |
