| Educate public/policy makers - Our nuclear energy presentations at COP21 in Paris in December of 2015 generated more than 40 news articles during the following months. This undoubtedly contributed to the increase in our educational activities this past year, especially in Washington, DC. It led to meetings between SCGIs president, Tom Blees, and Senator Cory Booker, his staff, and Senator Sheldon Whitehouses energy advisor. They were eager to hear about the advantages of nuclear energy and advances in nuclear technology and they are incorporating this information in new legislation. SCGI also attended meetings on advanced nuclear power sponsored by the DOE and NRC and participated in nuclear education workshops sponsored by Third Way, an influential bipartisan energy policy think tank. SCGI is an acknowledged resource for information and an active facilitator of bipartisan congressional efforts to promote nuclear energy. The media coverage at COP21 was also a shot in the arm for organizations that appreciate the need for nuclear energy in tackling problems ranging from climate change to global poverty. New NGOs such as Environmental Progress, Bright New World, and Generation Atomic, are attracting grass roots support and promoting policies to both protect and expand the US fleet of nuclear power plants. SCGI has strong working relationships with these organizations and their founders. Blees continues to write articles for media around the world, and to share nuclear energy information on podcasts, TV, and radio interviews. Most recently, he contributed commentary for The New Fire, a movie about nuclear power and climate change that is due to be released in 2017. | $69,154 | - |
| International collaboration - 2016 was a busy year for SCGI internationally, with its president traveling to meetings on four continents. In April, Blees returned to Moscow and met with SCGI founding member Evgeny Velikhov a prominent nuclear energy advisor to the Russian government and representatives of Rosatom. They explored the opportunities for continued cooperation between nuclear scientists and engineers in Russia and the USA given recent diplomatic tensions. Scientists from both nations recognize the importance of ongoing communication. Bleess continued inclusion on Russias Global Energy Prize Committee exemplifies this spirit of collaboration. In May, Blees returned to South Africa to advise politicians about nuclear power system alternatives that might help alleviate their energy and water needs. The trip included presentations at a major energy conference and a workshop for advanced math and science students in the township of Soweto. Bleess media engagements included an extensive interview on CNBC that was broadcast throughout Africa. In July, Blees traveled to Idaho National Laboratories for meetings designed to encourage cooperation in energy development between the USA, Japan, and South Korea. High-level representatives and scientists participated, including the former director of the International Energy Agency, Nobuo Tanaka, the former nuclear advisor for South Korean president Park, Soon Heung Chang, and nuclear engineers who have been working with SCGI since our advanced reactor conference at UC Berkeley in 2012. In September, Blees participated in a conference in France focused on nuclear power, climate change, and the formation of yet another educational NGO. From there he flew to China for a conference organized by the UN-affiliated World Energy Forum. He took the opportunity to have further meetings with the lead scientist for Chinas molten salt reactor project and helped organize meetings for him with molten salt developers in the USA. It has increased international cooperation in this promising field. | $64,496 | - |
| Other Technologies and Projects - SCGI continues to promote three other technologies: plasma conversion of waste to energy, electric long-haul trucking, and nuclear energy facilitated desalination and distribution. The plasma conversion project slowed dramatically this year when Air Products one of the leaders in this technology decided to restructure its portfolio and sell its interest. SCGI is working with other groups who have expressed a desire to invest in this technology. The long-haul trucking project was enhanced when Blees, while attending a nuclear energy conference in China, unexpectedly met the physicist who had helped design a lithium-air battery for IBM. Blees subsequently arranged meetings between the physicist and the truck designer and they are optimistic about a major breakthrough this year. SCGI has explored solutions to the growing challenge of water scarcity since our inception. During the past year, we have met with policy makers to discuss nuclear energy facilitated desalination in South Africa and pump assisted water distribution in the American West. | $6,873 | - |
