Mission

Transform Mid-Atlantic mobilizes the collective commitment of and capacity of higher education to actively advance our communities through civic and community engagement throughout the Maryland, DC and Delaware region. TMA serves its member institutions through networking, grants, resources and programs with the goal of developing deeper campus-community partnerships which improve community life.

TMA provides regional leadership in advocating, supporting, and increasing student involvement in academic and curricular-based community service and building capacity of local non-profits.

Governance Explanations

Part VI, Line 11B

The Form 990 and related schedules is presented to the Board for their review prior to filing with the IRS. The Transform Mid-Atlantic Board reviews the report annually as part of their fiscal review process.

Part VI, Line 12C

Officers, directors and key employees are required to complete an annual Conflict of Interest Questionnaire. The completed documents are reviewed by administrative personnel.

Part VI, Line 15A

The Board charged a special committee with development of the initial TMA financial budget, which included benchmarking and the Executive Director's salary and benefit package. The committee contacted the Maryland Association of Non-Profit Organizations, the Maryland State Department of Education, the Governor's Office on Services and Volunteerism, the State of Maryland Human Relations Office, the National Association of Non-Profit Organizations, the National Campus Compact, and several other state Campus Compact organizations to obtain comparison information in order to develop salary and benefits benchmarks for the Executive Director position. Other employees of the organization have had their salaries and benefit package set by the Executive Director after extensive due diligence and benchmarking, including the counsel of the HR department at TMA's hosting institutions, an HR consultant, and the Maryland Association of Non-Profit Organization's annual non-profit salary survey data.

The organization's Vision Statement, Mission Statement and Core Values are posted on its website (www.transformmidatlantic.org). A summary financial statement is available to the public through a website link to the most recently published annual report. The organization's Conflict of Interest Policy and governing documents are available upon request.

IRS990/Desc0CONVENING the MD, DC, DE, WV, & NORTHERN VA HIGHER EDUCATION COMMUNITY to ADVANCE the PUBLIC PURPOSES of HIGHER EDUCATION: As the largest higher education association in the Mid-Atlantic region, TMA regularly convenes member institution presidents, senior leaders, faculty, students, community leaders, and corporate partners, and other representatives to deepen the commitment of colleges and universities to their public missions that seek to (1) advance equitable and sustainable campus-community partnerships; (2) develop the next generation of engaged democratic and global citizens; and (3) catalyze positive social change through civic and community engaged programs, research, learning, and service. To accomplish this aspect of its mission, TMA hosts regular meetings for a Senior Advisory Group for Engagement, an annual Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Conference, institutes, a diverse array of engaging workshops and conversations, and professional development opportunities for member and non-member campus stakeholders and their community partners. Additionally, TMA facilitates an annual civic fellowship program for student leaders from throughout the region to participate in a year of leadership development through guest speaker sessions, a retreat, and capstone project.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0BUILDING CAMPUS COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS to ADDRESS POVERTY and CREATE THRIVING COMMUNITIES: TMA provides 30-38 AmeriCorps VISTA sub-grants (VALUED AT OVER $2,100,000) to member institutions and non-profit organizations in the Mid-Atlantic region. Through this grant, the full-time TMA VISTA program coordinators develop and expand anti-poverty partnerships between higher education institutions together with community-based organizations, non-profits, local schools, and/or school systems. TMAs survey data estimates that MEMBER INSTITUTIONS STUDENTS CONTRIBUTE OVER $600,000,000 IN SERVICES TO THE REGION ANNUALLY. Projects include college access & completion, food security, workforce development, mentoring, financial literacy, veterans initiatives, creating heathy and sustainable communities, etc. Through its Taskforces, Equity Conversation Series, Civic Education Series, K12/P20 Education Groups, Institutes, and other professional development opportunities, TMA provides resources to institutionalize and celebrate an inclusive, diverse culture through which all members of our communities can serve, fully participating in civic and community engagement initiatives. TMA advises senior leaders and partners on how to use these programs and partnerships to measure and demonstrate the fulfillment of campus missions and strategic priorities vis--vis accreditation through MSCHE.

These funding opportunities are used by a diverse array of community-engaged practitioners, faculty, and other stakeholders to create innovative new programs, community-based courses, and collaborative intercampus partnerships. Annually, TMA honors the inspiring contributions and work of an outstanding group of faculty, administrators, students, and partnerships within its membership through the TMA AWARDS PROGRAM. Since 2009, hundreds of community-engaged individuals and leaders impact across the region has been recognized! Through partnerships with national and regional organizations including The Alliance for Campus Community Engagement (ACCE), the Coalition for Service-Learning, The Facing Project, Fulbright, Carnegie, All In, MSCHE, and others TMA offers a bevy of additional funding and resource-based offerings to its members, as well as opportunities to highlight and share the powerful impact of civic and community engagement programs through advocacy and storytelling projects. TMA offers socially responsible corporations partnership opportunities to engage in civic and community development impact with our higher education and community partners.

The committee contacted the Maryland Association of Non-Profit Organizations, the Maryland State Department of Education, the Governor's Office on Services and Volunteerism, the State of Maryland Human Relations Office, the National Association of Non-Profit Organizations, the National Campus Compact, and several other state Campus Compact organizations to obtain comparison information in order to develop salary and benefits benchmarks for the Executive Director position. Other employees of the organization have had their salaries and benefit package set by the Executive Director after extensive due diligence and benchmarking, including the counsel of the HR department at TMA's hosting institutions, an HR consultant, and the Maryland Association of Non-Profit Organization's annual non-profit salary survey data.
