Mission

The DFTA is a unique organization that fosters collaboration between farmers and farmworkers in the United States and Canadian sustainable agriculture movement. We seek to build supply chains dedicated to principles of fairness, sustainability, and equity by uniting these efforts with mission-based traders, retailers, and consumers.

Program Services

Movement Building: In 2017, the DFTA hosted a bi-national gathering that connected farmers, farmworkers, retailers, processors, and advocates fighting for an agricultural supply chain that is heathy, sustainable, and just. In total, we served over 75 people. The meeting was filled with local tours, keynote speakers, panels, workshops, and the presentation of a domestic fair trade award. In addition, the DFTA hosted two other events to educate about domestic fair trade and advance our movement. Through hosting these gatherings , the DFTA is creating the opportunity for organizations and businesses to link their vital work on the ground to the larger goal of a world with more fair trade.$10,000$13,400
Research- The DFTA continued our partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Integrated Agriculture Systems to learn more about how domestic fair trade principles and framework can help support agriculture in the middle. The DFTA also began a new partnership with the Center for Fair and Alternative Trade (CFAT) at Colorado State University to do research that identifies successes and challenges to building supply chains that center fairness at every stage. We worked with CFAT to complete a brand new report that compiles all of the key research that's already been done on domestic fair trade. This research will provide insight on how the DFTA can advance domestic fair trade and how our members can alleviate some of the challenges that arise.$6,729$6,729
Advocacy- The DFTA joined the steering council of the HEAL Food Alliance. We have been a leader in developing a national advocacy campaign to expose corporate control of institutional markets, expand market access for family-scale producers, and demand investment in infrastructure for fair food. This campaign seeks to explicitly benefit family-scale farmers who have been previously shut out of institutional markets in their community.$0$0

We were waiting to file upon meeting with an accounting/tax consultant. The only time that we both were available to meet was right before the deadline. The consultant had an emergency and was unable to meet before the filing deadline. We were able to find a time to meet right after the deadline and that's why we are able to submit our 990-EZ just a couple of days after the deadline. In no way was there a conscious, intentional failure or reckless indifference in filing this 990-EZ late.
