Art Here Art Now - Creative Placemaking - In direct relation to our mission of building a rich and vibrant cultural destination on Chicago's South Side, HyPa has a clear vision for utilizing arts and culture to establish hubs of activity serving both residents and artists, and to contribute to the redevelopment of underserved and underutilized commercial areas. Recent programs like Art Here, Art Now (AHAN) respond to the needs of artists and engage the public, demonstrating HyPa's commitment to this vision. In October 2010, HyPa partnered with the University of Chicago to utilize a series of vacant storefronts on 53rd Street to respond to local artists' needs, to make art accessible, and to utilize the arts to contribute to the vitality of 53rd Street. The City of Chicago selected this project as one of 12 featured projects for Chicago Artists Month 2010. A second call for artists yielded eight new installations in the windows along 53rd Street on display December 2010 - January 2011. This evolving site of creative production, research and experimentation sparked conversations among residents, neighbors and strangers, and demonstrated that that art is made here and now in daily life. The University of Chicago has also granted HyPa use of another vacant space (5226 S. Harper) to support the use of arts to generate additional activity and energy on 53rd Street and to respond to the needs of its members. HyPa members offered a range of programs and events in the space ranging from salsa classes to auditions for a community theatre to a yugioh tournament.

Activity 3

Arts Service Activities - By design, HyPa works to address one of the most pressing challenges shared by its members, namely developing new and solidifying existing audiences within HyPa's neighborhood and from throughout the city and region. HyPa's commitment to audience development and destination marketing permeates all of its programs and activities. Programming like Passport to Jazz also serves as audience development and marketing tool for members throughout the year between annual Jazz Festivals. Relating to our 3rd strategic platform, HyPa is taking a more active role in advocating for the needs of arts organizations and artists at the local, city and state levels. HyPa is a member of Arts Alliance Illinois' Arts Power Chicago coalition which met with Mayor Emanuel's team to discuss arts and arts education policies. Our Executive Director serves on the Chicago Vitality Index Taskforce sponsored by Chicago Community Trust, Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning and Arts Alliance Illinois. HyPa also helped promote the city's Creative Chicago Survey to determine the needs of the city's creative community.
