Mission and Program Overview

Mission

In china today, where a child is born determines their educational prospect and therefore, life opportunities. Teach for china is working to elimitae educational inequality by enlisting the most promising leaders from china in the effort. By serving as teachers in low-income chinese schools and as alumni working in many sectors, these leaders will work to ensure that one day, all children in china enjoy access to a quality education.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Training and placement: teach for china provides fellows with the practical training they need to make a lasting impact on their students' futures. The core of our training regimen is an intensive summer institute, which prepares fellows to be effective classroom instructors, strong cross-cultural communicators, and integrated members of their placement communities. Summer institute incorporates expertise and best practices from western and chinese pedagogy experts, as well as proven best practices from the "teaching as leadership" training curriculum used throughout the teach for all network. The program includes a multi-week teaching practicum, through which fellows receive guided feedback as they teach summer school classes to local students. Fellows are placed in under-resourced schools which have been selected by teach for china based on demonstrated need and on the commitment of school principals to innovative collaboration. American fellows primarily teach english, while chinese fellows teach a variety of subjects including mathematics, chinese literature, science, and ethics. Fellows serve in cross-cultural teams comprising both american and chinese fellows, sharing knowledge of different cultures and educational approaches as they brainstorm solutions to local challenges. In 2011-2012 (fiscal year ended 2012), nearly 150 fellows served in 37 schools in high-poverty communities in chinas yunnan and guangdong provinces. We estimate that each fellow, through direct classroom instruction and extra-curricular programming, reaches approximately 150 students. This year (fiscal year ending 2013), our corps of fellows has grown to just over 200, reaching more than 30,000 students.
Activity 3
Support and local engagement: once they enter the classroom, fellows receive the support of full-time instructional coaches who engage in joint problem solving to boost student achievement. They receive curricular toolkits developed by teach for china including sample lesson plans, assessments, and standards tailored to their subject and grade level. Through monthly professional development conferences, fellows identify challenges and share best practices with one another and with local educators. The core of this support system is a team of program managers, who correspond with fellows regularly and visit their classrooms to provide targeted, individualized feedback. Program managers are experienced teachers and include former teach for china fellows, alumni of teach for america, and veteran teachers from the chinese education system. Teach for china maintains strong partnerships with government entities on program design and implementation, ensuring that our work is tailored to the specific needs of low-income schools. Our training and support team works closely with local teachers and heads of schools to share best teaching practices and to design a training curriculum tailored to the challenges of the local context. Teach for china has received strong endorsements of support from local government partners. In all three prefectures where we place fellows in yunnan province, local government directly supports teach for china's efforts by covering a portion of fellow salaries and other on-the-ground costs. Local engagement is essential not only to maximizing fellows' impact in the short term, but is crucial to our longer-term goal of promoting systemic change to improve educational opportunity in china. By partnering with local government, we demonstrate that educational inequity is a problem that can be solved and share best practices for broadening and improving the pipeline of teachers serving in under-resourced chinese schools.
