| Performing six to ten spiritually compelling choral music concerts each year, Te Deum offers concert experiences that inspire the listener and foster community. Te Deum was founded in 2008 to fulfill an expressed need by both singers and audiences in the Kansas City area to present sacred choral music concerts of the highest quality. Since then, the chamber choir has built an impressive and varied repertoire that spans centuries of time and wide ranges of composition style. Te Deum involves more than 30 artists each year and performs to more than 500 patrons annually. The 2021-2022 performance year was Te Deum's 14th season of presenting a diverse sacred choral repertoire in a uniquely relevant context, to create a musically inspiring, spiritually stirring experience. After the cancellation of the spring 2020 chamber choir concert, and virtual performances for all of the 2020-2021 season, Te Deum's ensemble members and audience members alike were eager to return to live, in-person performances. Te Deum presented six concerts in its Chamber Choir series, an Antiqua series concert, and two chanted vespers services. These vespers services were a new feature of Te Deum's programming. Other new features included the addition of a UMKC fellowship position and an assistant director. Te Deum also added post-concert receptions, giving audience members a chance to meet and interact with ensemble members. This has helped Te Deum establish a stronger connection with new and existing fans, giving audience members personal connections to the ensemble and building foundations for future sustainability."The Heart Cries Out" This concert, presented on September 18th at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral and on September 19th at Village Presbyterian Church, was Te Deum's first concert with a live audience in a year and a half. Two hundred and ninety-one (291) individuals attended these performances. "The Heart Cries Out" focused on the human emotions and feelings experienced during the worldwide pandemic: loss, abandonment, generosity, friendship, love, loneliness, rejoicing and the search to belong. A special commissioned work by Te Deum's composer in residence, James Eakin, received its world premiere. The work examined the importance of human touch, and the grief that so many experience at the loss of that, with text by Charles Anthony Silvestri. A poet, author, composer, and speaker, Silvestri has worked with other artists from all over the world to create texts tailor-made for their commissions and specific artistic needs. Eakin, a graduate of the UMKC Conservatory, has composed works that have sold out Carnegie Hall and taken the choral world by storm. Two hundred and ninety-one (291) individuals attended these performances and were overwhelmingly positive in their feedback. People expressed their appreciation for a return to in-person performances, and for the opportunity to meet singers after the concert at the cocktail hour. When asked what they liked most about the concert, audience members said: - "Of the many Te Deum concerts I have attended over the last 5 years, this was my favorite program. This was the music I needed to hear. Those who attended with me felt similarly, and that the music was very accessible to them as non-musicians." - "[The thing I liked most was] the commitment of the singers - [Their] determination to produce a high-quality performance despite masks, limited audience and opportunities to interact with audience." - "So many moments of transcendence! Such beautiful singing. I loved the creole piece, as well as Bring Us, oh Lord. However, the real shocker was the Whitacre piece. It is as if I'd never heard the song before that moment. That piece to me was pure magic. When done, I whispered "wow" just as I heard someone else 4 ft from me in the pew do the same. Wow, indeed!" "Christmas Joy" Te Deum performed its 4th annual Christmas concert on December 20th at Village Presbyterian Church and on December 21st at St. Mary's Episcopal Church. Featuring Kirke Mechem's 7 Joys of Christmas, the concert celebrated the many joys of the Christmas season, including the times that joy feels out of reach. The program explored themes of love, joy, generosity, and singing, with included works by Abbie Betinis, Samuel Barber, William Dawson and Kirke Mechem. The concert also featured a world premiere by our composer-in-residence, James Eakin. That piece, Our Voices Linger, spoke of the joy of community and the heartache of loss, loss that many of us might be feeling in the wake of the pandemic claiming so many lives. These concerts were some of the best attended in Te Deum's history. Nearly 500 audience members (494) came to the performances. One audience member said, "I thought the premiere of "Our Voices Linger" was especially poignant in this season of not only joy but of remembering those whom we have loved who are no longer with us. Thirteen years have flown by, and the group has become so well-respected. And for good reason. Thank you for presenting us with such a memorable Christmas gift." Antiqua Series: "Music of the Sistine Chapel" Patrons were invited to travel with Te Deum to 16th-century Rome and experience a Renaissance era service of the Sistine Chapel, the Pope's private space for prayer and worship. The concert featured Palestrina's beloved Pope Marcellus Mass, motets of Josquin des Prez, and Gregorian chant. The artistic director selected the literature under the notion that historical performance context aids in understanding and appreciating music of previous centuries. Placing music in the setting for which it was intended more fully reveals the beauty and intent of those centuries' greatest compositions. An attendee affirmed this choice, saying, "I liked that the concert was the entire mass start to finish. The church was a nice environment that reflected the music." Te Deum offered these performances on January 22nd at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Kansas City, MO, and on January 23rd at Grace Cathedral in Topeka, KS. One-hundred and seventy-one (171) people attended the concerts. "Divine" In collaboration with Father Justin Matthews of Reconciliation Services, Te Deum presented sections of the Orthodox All-Night Vigil service and the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom on June 11 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church and on June 12 at Village Presbyterian Church to audiences totaling 249 people. This concert integrated the works of the most famous Orthodox composers, including Rachmaninoff, Kalinnikov, and Tolstiakov, along with Nicholas Reeves, Benedict Sheehan, and Arvo Paert. "Divine" offered a window into the solemnity of the faith, showcasing the beauty and depth of its spirituality. Te Deum donated a portion of every ticket sold to Reconciliation Services. Vespers During the 14th season, Te Deum added vespers services fully chanted in Latin. These Gregorian chant services were presented as a free offering to the public on July 18th, 2021, and March 13th, 2022, both at St. Mary's Episcopal Church. Fr. Anthony Ruff from St. John's Seminary in Minnesota offered a pre-concert lecture on the history of Gregorian Chant and its place in a post Second Vatican liturgy to 62 audience members. One-hundred forty-eight (148) people attended the chant performances. Te Deum is committed to the study this form of music, one of the oldest in the Western world. Through the implementation of cutting-edge research, we share with the community thoughtful, historically informed, and detailed presentations of this ancient music.Assistant Conductor and UMKC Conducting Fellowship As part of Te Deum's artistic development, the agency added two new artistic positions. It created the UMKC Conducting Fellowship in partnership with UMKC. Each season, a graduate conducting student will receive the Conducting Fellowship and join Te Deum at rehearsals and performances serving in an assistant artistic role. Te Deum also created an assistant conductor role, primarily to prepare the ensemble for performances when the artistic director cannot attend rehearsals. The inaugural UMKC conducting fellow is Bryan Waznik, and the current assistant conductor is Jon Duncan. Both roles are helping Te Deum mature and grow as a top-quality ensemble. Te Deum is proud of its achievements in its 14th season. We've weathered the storm of the pandemic. We were one of the few choirs to remain active during the dark days of 2020 and 2021, and our supporters have enthusiastically returned to our live performances. We're making strides in our artistic development, and we are eagerly looking forward to our 15th anniversary season. | $0 | $47,620 |
