“Part III, Line 28 Statement of Program Service Accomplishments”
“Benjamin Franklin Experience graduated 44 students from its pilot program in 2017, allowing students to try on 10 different careers for a day in science, engineering, journalism, music, medicine, and more. Pre and post program testing showed that 80% of graduates showed increased emotional intelligence, one of the most sought after soft skills desired by employers today.”
“Additionally, students test scores increased--some exponentially; many saw behavioral improvements; several found internships and apprenticeships with companies they visited during the program; many connected with new career mentors; and most identified careers they wished to pursue. The following activities allowed us to generate these results:”
“Invention of 30 day-long, hands-on experiences in 14 different careers, in which teens meet high-performing individuals who create simulations, exercises, and experiences that demonstrate the nuances and realities of their respective professions.”
“Curriculum design to integrate soft-skill training, setting behavioral expectations, instruction on body language, social mores, presentation and communications skills throughout each experience.”
“Construction of Benjamin Franklin Experience website as program brochure, application portal, payment portal for tuition, and way for parents and students to access program documents and instructions.”
“Creation of student handbook, risk management policies, emergency procedures, and procurement of liability insurance”
“Development of relationships with community partners that served as guest-instructors/experience hosts, including Greenville Health System Simulation Center; GE; The Greenville News; Thrive Upstate; composer, Cale Pellick; and Furman University's Environmental Science Department.”
“Human resources functions, including creation of job descriptions, setting up payroll, posting job openings, interviewing staff, hiring, onboarding, and training staff.”
“Communications with Greenville County School District leadership, and various Charter schools in Greenville, including Legacy Early College, and NEXT High School regarding logistics of nominating students to the program.”
“Student application review and acceptance processes, including determination of students emotional readiness for the program, enrollment logistics, including completion of permission and release forms.”
“Recruiting of high-performing mentors to the program, including former NFL coach, Executive coach, school counselors and psychologists, venture capitalists, artists, entrepreneurs and writers.”
“Transportation logistics, including arranging for students to get to and from class headquarters and arranging for transportation to-and-from home and headquarters for students who would not otherwise be able to attend the program.”
“Procurement of lunch and snacks for all experiences, particularly for students on free-lunch during school (for some this was the only meal they ate in a day.)”
“Pre and post program testing and evaluation from independent third-party to evaluate program effectiveness.”
“Focus group testing and individual interviews of students, both before and after the program, to continually improve and assess the programs efficacy.”
