Mission and Program Overview

Mission

826 is the largest youth writing network in the country. 826 National serves as the hub of the movement to amplify student voices and champions the belief that strong writing skills are essential for lifelong success. Founded in 2002, the 826 Network now serves more than 900,000 students annually ages 6-18 in under-resourced communities each year through nine chapters in twelve US cities and via 826 Digital, a free online platform serving educators through lesson plans, student writing, and resources, designed to help teach and ignite a love of writing. In addition, there are more than fifty 826-inspired organizations across the globe. Collectively, we work toward a country in which the power and the joy of writing is accessible to every student in every classroom. We believe writing is the key to cultivating a new generation of creative and diverse thinkers who will define a better, brighter, and more compassionate future.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Scholarmatch: through scholarmatch, we are committed to helping students pursue a college education, no matter what their financial status. We provide students with an online tool to post a profile and engage the community-at-large to invest in their future. Through this medium, donor-student relationships are formed and our students head off to college with the support and motivation to succeed. Aligned with this mission is our commitment to providing offline resources to help students through the college process.scholarmatch currently accepts applications from college-bound students in the immediate bay area. We currently serve 132 students, the majority of whom are the first in their families to go to college. Throughout the year, we offer free workshops and in-school outreach in order to reach economically disadvantaged youth who have the opportunity to continue their education. On our site, we were thrilled to feature a large majority of students who will be the first in their families to go to college. As we grow, we plan to accommodate students from each 826 chapters across the country.scholarmatch's objectives are to: * provide a secure online tool for college-bound students to create profiles that reflect their commitment to their academic future.* provide a secure online space for potential donors to learn about the amazing students in their community, and ultimately pledge contributions toward that student's scholarship goal.* facilitate individualized donor and student relationships: once a donation is made and that donor is matched with a student, the student sends written updates to his/her donor about their experience in college. Our first six months of operation facilitated a connection between 164 individual donors who have given their support to 46 students. Through the effort of multiple individual donors, our students have been able to reach their scholarship goals, and in the fall of 2010, 17 of our 42 funded students were able to attend college having attained the goal they posted on scholarmatch. In addition to individual interest in our program, we have also received positive feedback about our organization, and have been able to raise awareness about our organization through: * a feature in the san francisco chronicle, oakland tribune, and kqed's forum with michael krasny* a featured listing at the franklin whole foods location as a participating organization in their nickels-for-nonprofits program* a spotlight of scholarmatch students on ktvu's bay area people* an acknowledgement from san francisco magazine, where scholarmatch placed second on their list of the best of the (brave, new) bay area 2010
Activity 3
Outreach: finally, we participate in the national discussion around writing and literacy. We present at conferences, universities and other events to share our methodology.news about the 826 model has spread over the last 9 years. The national office fields interest from people and organizations around the world by offering informational seminars about our work. These events act as fundraisers that support 826 national and the chapters, and allow people to build networks around youth literacy. This year, we hosted 76 people for informational seminars. We also collect writing by students across the country for publication in books and chapbooks, and for hosting on our student writing gallery on the 826 national website.
